so i just started this big interactive cutscene and zombies are everywhere and the girl broke her leg...
RIP Texas.
but was it ever explained what caused the zombies?

As for what caused the infection what everyone else said, now as for the origin I think there is a newspaper that mentions it was carried in foodstuffs.
