Dark Souls II Critique

!This video contains spoilers! I didn't actually have to say anything other than this critique hit spot on. A hard but fair review of Dark Souls II with comparisons to its predecessors. I have to say: I was disappointed with Dark Souls II before I even watched the video. Don't get me wrong - Dark Souls II is a good game, but it's a bad Soul's game. To explain it; I acknowledge the Soul's games as an experience rather than just only a game. The feeling of despair, the feeling of accomplishment after beating a boss and the deep story behind the Soul games made them unique. I still remember Oscar, Sif, Artorias, Ciaran, Sigmeyer, Solaire, Gwyn and my fair lady - hell, I know the name of every single Dark Souls character because everyone of them was memorable. Sadly this is not the case with Dark Souls II. I don't even remember the name of crestfallen warrior 2.0 and the last time I played was yesterday. After you have watched this video I just want to make a suggestion; spread the information - the points of this video are valid. I don't want you to whine on different forums but give constructive critisism on the right boards. It might have an effect on future games of the Soul's series. I will at least send one mail to the developers and publishers and open a topic about this on another board to at least have the feeling that I did something.

  • As much as I love Dark Souls 2 I miss when the hitboxes were this accurate.

    • For me Dark souls 1 had the superior story, characters & setting/areas but had slow clunky combat which is what made the game harder because you had to be more precise with timing attacks & rolling. Dark souls 2 on the other hand has much better combat, it's faster, smoother & isn't as clunky feeling but everything else is indeed forgettable & I was extremely disappointed in how Dark souls 2 looks nothing like the gorgeous demo version.

      • Dark souls 2 is honestly one of my favorite games of all time, and I agree with the character points. It lacked a lot of what made dark souls 1 memorable. Remember not wanting to kill Sif? Remember being pushed off a cliff by Patches?remember the first encounter with the titanite demon when you walk past the blacksmith? Remember praising the sun!?!? Or the cutscenes as quelag (spelling?) or the gaping dragon entered the boss area? Dark souls 2 is missing those moments type of moments. The only things I can think of that come close are having the pursuer drop down on your head, the first time you go to dragon aerie, finding the shrine of the heirs to the sun, that's all I can think of of the top of my head. But is this because dark souls 1 prepared us for dark souls 2, or did from just drop the ball?

        • Watched the whole thing, and I can agree. I do enjoy Dark Souls II, but they could have done it much much better than what we were given.

The only thing I like more in dark souls 2, is the combat. It's a great improvement. However the story, atmosphere, enemy design, map design, character intrigue, and pacing, is all worse than dark souls 1. Benhart of Jugo is my bro though, love that guy. And jester Thomas is a thug as well, wish he was more prevalent. It sucks too because now that I've grown accustomed to dks2 combat, I couldn't even go back to dks1 without raging at the combat (not that the combat is bad, it's just not as good as dks2).

        • I agree on some points.but i found dark souls 2 easier due to player dark souls 1 and learning what to do within souls franchise.if i was a new player i would die as much as i did when i started dark souls 1. But their where only 3 bosses i had trouble with in DS2 ,DS1 was about 8.so i personally think they dumbed down the bosses.some of them i done first try no co-op others i had to co-op. Still love the game just dark souls 1.5 not dark souls 2 upgraded version samething.and story is lacking in alot of areas but must be hard to make another big game after such suceess with DS1

        • It lacks innovation, which is actually a reason so many people like it.

I agree with a lot of what he says in the video. Honestly, its the world and level design that just got to me. The way areas connected to Majula are blocked off from the start, the lack of continuity when it comes to the world, as well as the horrid, and the just downright not Souls series linear level design. Look at Earthen Peak from Harvest Valley and tell me how the elevator inside goes up to Iron Keep. Dark Souls 1 world flowed together perfectly, you could see the Demon Ruins from the Tomb of the Giants and vice versa. You could look down from Firelink and see Blighttown. The levels in the world fit perfectly together and didn't overlap. In Dark Souls 2, the Shaded Woods breaks off into three paths. But if you're paying attenting, you'll notice they all end up going the same direction. Aldias Keep, Drangelic Castle, and the Shaded Ruins are all right on top of eachother. The actual levels themselves, with the exception of the Forest of the Giants, are all one way path with no shortcuts and a bonfire on every corner like they're Starbucks. Look at the Huntsmans Copse, theres the first bonfire in the area. Then theres about 6 enemies before you run into the next bonfire and for some reason theres a shortcut back to the first bonfire. This is some of the worst level design I've ever seen in a game. Dark Souls 2 isn't a bad game, its actually one of the better ones to come out in a while. Its just a bad Souls game.

          • Why not just actually give the criticism? Surely you don't actually expect people to watch a 50 minute video when you could just sum it up in seconds.

              • Honestly I think that dark souls II is a really good game, but what makes it different from dark souls is the fact that it feels more medieval. I don't know how to describe it. It's just that to me dark souls felt more mystical, and had more likable characters. The only character that I actually liked w as that female person that was turning halo. A lot of the other characters were basically "buy something or GTFO"

              • Something I've noticed about the series is it's incredibly easy it's just got insanely shitty mechanics.

                • I quite enjoyed it. Also people said that Demon Souls was easier the Da1 because you could have a large number of healing items. That doesn't make it true though the player still have to have the knowledge of how to execute healing, rollicking etc. Lets not forget that the Souls series aren't that challenging when you get to know it. And DAk2 made advances in several areas but especially multiplayer.

It's not quite as magical as the first time, this same point was also pointed out between Demon's Souls and Dark Souls.
