Destiny should be rated T

I believe Destiny should be rated T and I'm not just saying that because I can't play M rated games, but because of other gamers than can only play T rated games and are looking forward to playing Destiny. When I first saw the Destiny law of the jungle trailer I was amazed! I bet a lot of other gamers were impressed to and I would hate it to make a gamer suffer just because of one stupid rating. I personally think this game is going to be rated T for multiple reasons. First of all, I don't think guardians are going to be dropping F-bombs every time they're hit. Second reason is that I really don't see blood or anything so that shouldn't be a problem. And I know that some other people want it to be rated M because they like blood and swearing, but honestly, do you think the world would be the same after what happens in the Destiny story? And in the trailers they seem to be more of the high manners type, not people dropping F-bombs. But the main reason I want this game to be rated T is because of all the gamers that can only play T rated games. Let me know what you think.

  • Bungie games aren't all that violent, even when rated M. Talk to your parents, and explain to the how bungie hasn't released a game worth an m rating in at least 9 years.

Here's the link to the ESRB's content descriptors. Barring sexuality, it would take at least a single occurrence of Strong Language (F--k), or realistic blood staining effects to move Destiny from Teen to a Mature rating. Certain content descriptors are shared between the M and T ratings. You'll look on the back of Halo Reach (M) and notice that it shares the "Blood" and "Violence" descriptors with games like Uncharted and Blacklight: Retribution (both T). Interestingly, the sole difference between Halo Reach and Blacklight: Retribution (aside from the obvious fun-factor) is that blood in Reach will stain the environment, whereas Blacklight's blood is limited to a brief plume or splash, but never effects the surroundings. Another important fact is that the ESRB does not discriminate between gameplay and a pre-rendered cutscene. It's all rated as being in-game content so that one exceedingly violent act in a non-controlled cutscene could get the entirety of an otherwise age-approved 100 hour experience rated Mature. There's a ton of little kinks with ESRB's formula but at least they've been pretty consistent for the past 14 years.

A Bungie T rated game just doesn't sound right. I hope that it is rated M. All the other Halo were (except for Halo Wars) and people under 17 still played them. Same goes with CoD, Battlefield, and countless other great games.

    • This game will have violence. You don't need to have profanity for a game to be rated M. This game will be rated M for violence and suggestive themes.

      • M just sounds better. Most twelve year olds who want it will get it despite of rating anyway.

I disagree. I think Destiny should earn it's M-rating. I want to at least hear a disgruntled staff sergeant mutter a disappointed "Shit."

The M rating makes for a more realistic world, also cursing and blood aren't the only major qualifiers for an M rating, scenes with people gambling and or drinking alcohol, etc.. Common shit considered to adult by the people chosen to rate this game, it's not a huge gathering of people who vote on this, it's about 3-5 people who watch the play footage of every scene listed by the developer as possibility for a M rating. The developer is required to show all content even locked content. So even stuff you don't see is taken into consideration.

          • Parents have been complaining about violent video games for so long that ESRB has to make most, not all, games where you kill people. So sure, If this game was made 15 years ago it would probably be rated teen but not anymore.

          •
do you think the world would be the same after what happens in the Destiny story?
This point just kind of works against all your arguments. No the world will not be the same as before the collapse however it isn't going to be any better. Humanity has been crammed into a city with a gigantic alien orb hanging over it. On top of this we will have to deal with feelings between Awoken and Humans, while we don't know if there will be any tension between the races come on our species isn't renowned for being accepting. Every day there is tension between races in our world and race isn't even that large of a difference when it comes to our genes. What makes you think they will be any better after humans have been pushed to near extinction after a golden age, we are being attacked by multiple alien species that want what we have as well as some dark force that no one understands that wants to snuff us out. Without the titans the wall would of been lost. The warlocks hid away and studied their space magic. Hunters left humanity and lived in the wild only now returning to help humanity take back its solar system. Humanity is at war, on the brink of extinction, fighting against insurmountable odds to regain it's place in the universe. I don't expect the world to be the same. I expect the world to be dark and scared that it is going to be snuffed out of existence looking to the traveller and to our guardians to help restore humanity to its former glory. Always looking for hope on the horizon but never forgetting how close it all is to ending. While I'm sorry younger gamers can't play it if it's rated M I would much rather them leave things in to make the world seem more real. If we run into an old hunter deep in the wild thats pissed at the universe and wants to drop a few F bombs let him. If a member of our fire team gets hit by an alien and injured let there be blood. Show us humanities bad side while allowing us to see the hope that we give them for change. All trying to make a game T so more people can play it does is lower the immersion of the game. I'm not saying T rated games can't be fun but the lower the game is rated the less real it tends to feel. While yes I realize this is a video game it is about our solar system, our future, our descendants, give us a dose of reality and anything you have to do to explain something that doesn't fit reality such as teleporting or disintegration use sic-fi or space magic to explain it. Don't cut a game down just so younger people can play without parents permission. Everyone was young and wanted to be able to do what older people do without permission. Now it's your turn to wait in the future it will be someone else's turn to wait. Talk to your parents let them know it's just aliens, don't play PvP around them. Help them understand the game more so they are more comfortable with you playing it. Ratings are there for a reason let them serve their purpose.

          • While I generally think the ESRB rating system is a total load of malarky, as a father, I can understand where having some instant insight into what my children are trying to get me to buy them could come in handy. That being said, as an avid video game enthusiast, and someone who played "violent" games as a young adult (Doom, Quake, etc.), I don't get the scare some parents have about the ESRB ratings. OP, your best course of action would be researching the effects of video games, and digging up ACTUAL (read: not wikipedia, use a library) studies that have been done on the effects of violent media on children/developing brains, and presenting the results to your parents in an informed manner. If my daughter made a good enough argument, I'd let her play whatever she wanted (and I do). TL;DR: Stand outside of your favorite retailer and beg people to buy it for you, it's what kids did for booze and smokes when I was your age.

            • Blood is one of the many things that made Halo awesome, Hunters would be no fun to kill unless they sprayed out golden blood when you hit their weak spot. I agree that younger gamers shouldn't have to miss out on playing Destiny, but I also want a colorful experience that makes my bullets feel meaningful.

              • It'll be rated M. I've never been able to tell by the gameplay, but the age-lock on the website all but assures us. Nevertheless Destiny, like Halo before it, isn't a real intense shooter. The goal isn't to make you feel like you're in a war. Most of the emphasis will be on exploration and discovery, and on teamwork when in combat. Likely we're looking at the same level of violence as Halo.

                • Arguably its not rated ever if the game is always online. Like most multipkayer with live the diaclaimer is that that content isn't rated because everyone's experience is different.
