Loot Drops

Less drops with rare guns

Should you get a lot of loot per kill and have most of them be weak with a low chance of rare gun like in borderlands or have more rare loot drops that drops less of it but is usually very powerful when you do get a drop?

  • Considering that bungie has said that every piece of equipment will have it's own sort of "leveling tree " I'd rather have less loot so I'm not as tempted to keep switching my gear.

      It should be setup like Diablo where even when you get a rare, it's stat roll is still random... So just because you earned a rare weapon doesn't necessarily mean it will be the right one for your build or even that good at all... Forcing you to try for it again if you want the chance at a better roll

It really seems like the things going on behind the scenes try to make each drop meaningful to you. I'm not sure if this means you might never get a gun that's "below your level" but in theory it could. It seems as though they're putting a lot of effort into making everything the player gets meaningful. Not to say that Borderlands didn't. I went to a GDC talk that covered the humor in Borderlands and a theme I saw that kept coming up was that the writers kept wanting to have joke weapons - but they were always initially shot down because they didn't want any weapons that the player wouldn't possibly want to use. (For example no gun that has a ridiculously low damage of 1 or something) so they thought of other ways to make the guns serve as gags (the screaming gun that was fairly powerful). However, due to all the guns stats being randomly generated sometimes you end up with things that don't appeal to you as a player. The way Tyson Green talks about the loot drops could imply that the things going on behind the scenes could actually predict what a good drop for you is. Things like play style taken into account could perhaps determine if you really want a shotgun from this drop. For example maybe you've been using a sniper but you're build is all wrong for it. You've got a lot of things stacked so that you would really benefit from a close quarters play style or despite using the sniper maybe you still end up in a lot of fist fights with people. Or maybe they look at your "shopping habits" in the tower. You've been eyeing that pulse rifle for a week now checking the price so here you go take it from this encounter. These are obviously contrived examples but the words Tyson uses throughout that interview really speak to me as wanting to provide the player with meaningful rewards. I don't think you could just get any gun from any encounter. I'm sure encounters have loot tables with possible drops and such but I don't expect you'll be sitting on a pile of guns any time soon. There was also an excerpt from a weekly update earlier this year that relayed a story of a group of employees who took the game home and came back to discuss the possibly broken loot system because no one got an exotic gun. Except one guy who immediately became the talk of the studio. This also seems to point to the likelihood that weapon drops will be less like pinatas and more like birthday presents.

    • I don't think we should get exotic weapons with random drops for a variety of reasons that I've elaborated on fully in a different [url=http://www.bungie.net/7_Destiny39s-Design-Exotic-Exclusivity/en/Forum/Post?id=64293430]thread[/url] of mine, but to sum it up, random drops only serve to lengthen out the exotic acqusition process, sometimes frustratingly so for players who want to earn a certain exotic. I believe it's better to gate exotics behind appropriately challenging tasks that will for sure award an exotic upon completion, that way players can measure how close they are to obtaining their goal and it removes a lot of the frustrating uncertainty that comes with random drops. On the other hand, random drops work out fine for non-exotics, especially since there's likely going to be much more of those than there are exotics. Helps to create a non-deterministic experience, surprise, variety, all of that jazz. But as soon as the novelty of being suprised with something new is overshadowed with the frustration associated with acquiring a certain item? Better to cut it off and gate it behind a proper challenge so that earning the exotic feels more like an achievement than dumb luck :)

      • I want to get a piece of rare loot or elite gear and feel rewarded for getting it. By taking down a tough fallen captain or making my way into the deepest dungeon on a raid.

        • What if they put in "treasure maps" like in AC4. Where you have to travel to an area and then battle an elite enemy to get some good loot. That would be interesting. I don't know of any MMO that has that... please correct me if I am wrong. I also think less drops with more rarity is going to be good. Just hope I don't have to farm the $h1t out of bosses/elites to get the weapon/gear I want. I DESPISED that in WoW... -cheers

            • I think weak enemies should drop weak weaps, and medium difficulty drop more rare and valuable items, and main bosses should drop rare loots, but the rarity should depend on the lvl of player and the drop should be different for everyone.

                • To me, loot drops shouldn't be things that happen in every skirmish. I think they should be rewards for overcoming something a little more challenging (think Rixis and the Spider Tank from the E3 demo). I would assume enemies would drop some kind of ammo after being killed, but I don't want to have to check my inventory every time I drop a Dreg to delete a common hand cannon that I will never use, like what ended up happening in Mass Effect 1. I also don't want to have even the slightest chance of picking up an exotic from putting down a Vex Goblin. I want to feel like everything I have was earned, not given to me by some quirk in the machine

                • If bungie is making all the weapons and not randomly generating them I feel like there won't be that many loot drops. I mean we have armor to find also but I can't see every enemy dropping something other than glimmer. I feel only really bosses might drop stuff. Do we know if things like chests are in game to just randomly find loot?

                  I think it should be Dark Souls style. Semi frequent drops of the normal variety, but your have to go through pain to get the special gear. But I don't want the normal drops to be worthless when fully leveled. Let them AT LEAST be worth something so you won't feel like a total loser when all your friends have cool gear and you're a have not.

                  • We currently have six members and are openly recruiting for the beta of Destiny. i am also opening a youtube channel to record/stream me playing with the guild. My guild id called Gods of Conquest and we are welcome to have anyone of any playing style. Strength comes in numbers, and when we find a rare loot item, our group will make it public to all members in forums

                  • I believe it was stated in a podcast that there will be less drops then in other games but when they happen you'll be able to use what you get rather then chucking it.

                      My thoughts are, that what can you do if say you help out in the Old Russia mission and you get the Thunderlord drop and you allready have it from previous, can you then break it Down and use it for upgrade parts or are you allowed to sell it or will that imply the "Pay to win" aspect for other players or will it have different stats to it or something But I´m kinda stuck between less drops with rares and plenty of drops with all kinds of guns
