Why are biracial people considered black/hispanic?

...When they could be just as easily called white? I suppose it could be because being white denotes having a major lack of pigment in your skin, whereas a biracial person still might have a good deal of skin coloration, but that hardly makes them black. I honestly find such distinctions petty, and I'm from a racially diverse family, but I'd kind of like to know the reasoning behind why biracial persons are considered to be black or Hispanic and not white.

  • This bigger question is why are Arabic people considered white. I think minority scholarships and stuff like that are bullshit, but one of my friends is 1/8th Mexican and got a minority scholarship, and one of my friends who is 100% pure blood Egyptian (her parents came here from there) couldn't get one because "Arabic people are considered white"
