Why are biracial people considered black/hispanic?

...When they could be just as easily called white? I suppose it could be because being white denotes having a major lack of pigment in your skin, whereas a biracial person still might have a good deal of skin coloration, but that hardly makes them black. I honestly find such distinctions petty, and I'm from a racially diverse family, but I'd kind of like to know the reasoning behind why biracial persons are considered to be black or Hispanic and not white.

  • Up until secondary school I considered myself to be white. It was really weird when I moved and people were calling me black. Not in a bad way, I'd like to mention.
