Still would have looked awesome with SS1 hair. And about Gohan, I think in terms of canon it may have had something to do with Elder Kai unlocking all of his power. Sure, a half Saiyan is less powerful than a pure-blooded Saiyan no matter what, but to me it felt like the unlock put a ceiling on how high his power level could get.

Gohan only had his 5 minutes in the spotlight when he was fighting Cell.

That's because fans wanted Goku to return, the creator wanted Gohan to become the main fighter in the Magin Buu Saga but due to fans demand Goku was brought back. Talk about a retcon on the fly.

Ironic because Gohan was more popular than Goku until he sacrificed himself during the battle with Cell.

Yea I think most people consider Gohan transforming against Cell as the best moment in the anime.

I think so too. That's the part where Gohan finally becomes a warrior and, even if it turned out to be temporarily, surpassed even Goku in power. But I think it would have been a lot better if he never became a Super Saiyan while he was in the Hyperbolic Time chamber and first transformed after Android 16 was destroyed. It would have made the transformation more dramatic, plus it would have made more sense because Super Saiyans were supposed to be made from extreme anger or sorrow.
