Is mental illness on the rise?

Today at work, I found out one of my friends tried to commit suicide a few years back, which means that I now know three of my friends attempted suicide at least once. Is this normal for people? I see quite a lot about stuff depression, suicide and other disorders, even a lot from you guys. I used to think it was mostly people overreacting till my friend went through it, and I saw how morbid and sad it all was. It seems to me a I don't really hear about this kind of stuff from my parents or older friends/relatives, so are these illness's on the rise due to increasing societal pressures on young people? Or is there just more people willing to discuss it? What do you guys think.

I think people are much more open and accepting of it now so it seems to be popping up more often. Also a lot of people fake it to look cool and fit it. I don't know why. I just remembered in high school almost every girl had depression or some sort of eating disorder. It made it very hard for people who actually had a mental disorder to be taken seriously. Me, personally, I have a form or OCD. I don't mention it too often because people think it has something to do with light switches or washing hands. It's usually very mild so I don't get a hard time for it or mention it much. In high school and after, I dated a lot of people who had mental disorders. Some had ADHD and depression, others had schizophrenia and bipolar. My boyfriend currently has tourettes.
