Say that three times fast...
The Nahverteidigungswaffe was a smoke discharger/Close defense system mounted on German panzers. These ports were mounted on the vehicles super structure and turret to allow for maximum concealment (when dealing with smoke) and maximum effect against close assaulting infantry. The Nahverteidigungswaffe ports could also carry 92mm HE grenades that would launch just like smoke to kill infantry around the tank, they also allowed SMG's or flare pistols to be fired through them as well. Another rather brutal use of these ports were to mount S-Mines on them that would launch out to kill close proximity infantry near the tank. Allied tanks used smoke dischargers in the same way as German tanks during World War 2, and even today modern AFV's have smoke launchers to obscure themselves against enemy attacks.
