Is mental illness on the rise?

Today at work, I found out one of my friends tried to commit suicide a few years back, which means that I now know three of my friends attempted suicide at least once. Is this normal for people? I see quite a lot about stuff depression, suicide and other disorders, even a lot from you guys. I used to think it was mostly people overreacting till my friend went through it, and I saw how morbid and sad it all was. It seems to me a I don't really hear about this kind of stuff from my parents or older friends/relatives, so are these illness's on the rise due to increasing societal pressures on young people? Or is there just more people willing to discuss it? What do you guys think.

  • I'd imagine it has to do more with a higher sense of awareness. About a century ago, I probably would've been diagnosed with "delusional megalomania" or some other barely-applicable bullshit. Now, "problems" I, and others, have can be caught much more effectively and precisely.
