Musician and researcher Charles Limb wondered how the brain works during musical improvisation -- so he put jazz musicians and rappers in an fMRI to find out. What he and his team found has deep implications for our understanding of creativity of all kinds.
This is a video from a couple of years ago, but the ideas are still relevant as to understanding how creative ideas are formed in a human mind. It turns out that several different parts of the human mind are activated when doing activities such as musical improv or freestyle rapping and interestingly enough, it also seems like certain parts of the brain "shut off" when creating new ideas. It is like the brain gets rid of any creative inhibitions that would stop new ideas from being expressed and allows them to come out naturally.
