People who say it's shit over react, and people who praise it tend to be idiots. The show had a great premise and the first episode was really good. After that it turned into Kirito getting all the bitches. The action was fun, but it was lacking in most other areas. Great potential wasted.

After reading the lite novels, I can kind of agree with this, I use to praise and love the anime so much, but then I read the light novel and it goes so much deeper into detail that everything fits more, and makes more sense.

I just don't see how the story is lacking to some people though. I had so many feels during the show and when it was airing I just wanted more after every episode and it drove me crazy to wait. Also I don't feel like the focus was him getting all the ladies. He connected with people in a hopeless world and showed them that u can still have a life in the death game and enjoy aspects of it. I'm not saying you gotta like it at all, just expressing what I got out of it.

Most of the people Kirito encountered throughout the series developed some sort of romantic interest in him. Even his sister. If the show had been more about the interaction of people and the adaption to a new environment, and not the romance it would of been great.
