We often find ourselves discouraged by those that can do what we love better than us. We also often forget that they struggled and put a lot of work to be where they are now. One doesn't simply wake up one day and have been granted unsurpassed talent in any particular subject. The time old method of honing your craft is to practice. But sometimes that isn't enough. You need guiding hands. Support. Reassurance and peers to lean your shoulder on. In this thread you can discuss your art blocks, inspirations, favorite artists, share tutorials, and give your hand to your fellow artists. Whatever your niche may be, there's someone there to lend an ear and provide a step ahead. If you have tutorials/videos that may help or artists you find inspiring feel free to share them under the designated sub-thread. If you want to share your art without a critique say so when you post it. If you want one make sure to state that. Some personal guidelines I follow under the cut
1. Use References. Unless you know you've got the feel of something completely memorized by heart and hand you should always use a photo to help you. You will learn faster and with less frustration/pain. Even if you're doing a cartoon piece. Cartoons are simply real things simplified. 2. Do not ever learn anatomy from drawings. Art is often stylized and it's not always correct. While it's fine to learn style and carve out your own, studying anatomy from other artist's work will hazard fatal mistakes and minimize actual learning. 3. Keep your old doodles. Even if you hate them. You can either later reflect on them to see what you've learned, or as what's happened with me, look back at it and realize it was actually very good. You were only being hypercritical. Old drawings can be salvaged, reformed, or stylized into something magnificent. 4. Do not be discouraged by other artist's work! I cannot tell you how poisonous this is. I am guilty of it and from first hand experience can tell you how detrimental it is. Your work is an expression of yourself. Different art styles doesn't equal being better or worse than someone else. You can admire someone's style without copying or stripping away your own. Instead of being heart broken by "better" work you should learn from them. Ask them questions. Get advice or see how they view their art. Chances are they think they're nothing compared to the artists that they look up to. 5. Practice and feel good. Enjoy what you do. Don't force it or feel you need to draw/create as much as others. For almost all of us art is a hobby. Hobbies are meant to be enjoyed. Create what interests you even if it's not popular or will get everyone's attention. If you have an uncommon style those that indulge in it will appreciate it all the more. 6. Don't be afraid to experiment. You'll learn great things you never would have thought you were capable of.
_______________________________________________________________________ I am a SAI Paint Tool user. I have little to no advice about Photoshop! I am sorry. I also apologize if I haven't commented on everyone's stuff. I will get to it! (or I will at least "like" it so you know you're not forgotten) I've been very busy and I enjoy giving well thought out help instead of rushing it between work breaks.

  • Just made this one a little earlier today whilst listening to the soundtrack of Super Motherload! Inspired by Tom "Core" Keeling, this guy is so far the closest thing to me showing off what I look like due to the hairstyle used.

After not practice my usual art style for some time I decided to give Lt. Fodder a friend. The results were: -oversized chauchat -slight error that kind of looks like I gave him a nose -"eh..." pose -oversized chauchat. + nice curly hair + a potentially like able character. +a little more practice with proper human portion ? A friend asking me if I've ever thought of trying different art styles. (Also note that this was my last blue index card)

    • Gentlemen, I have good news! A little while back I bought myself a sketchpad for work in the digital realm. I've been learning the handling on it for a little while now. And, I have a decent enough understanding of how things work now. But I'm excited today to say that everything finally clicked into place. I put the pieces of the puzzle together and now understand how to do things on my own. I find that even the simplest processes that are shown to me fail to work for me if I attempt to replicate them. So, instead I take them apart and re-arrange them while maintaining the core idea behind them. So, at some point, when I finish my first piece, I will put it up here. I decided to look at something relatively simple in design. A T-800 from Terminator. A blend of Human features and rigid structure, with simple tones. Just a simple headshot, nothing too complicated. But I think if now that I finally put the puzzle together it will look much, much better than all my earlier attempts. But it will take time though. None the less I am very excited.

    • Drew this. Hopefully people get the joke. In Worms you can get healed by a lighting strike. I always thought that was a bit odd. That's why I drew this.

Those feels when your latest photo shoot is cursed with crushed blacks and unwanted chromatic aberration. Something wrong with my stock lens, I think. The blacks are salvageable because of RAW format and is probably just the result of me over correcting the exposure... well that or my monitor is uncalibrated again (not the first time it has happened and made me think some photos were ruined), but still. The distortion is completely unfixable on a lot of the photos. Don't normally use the lens in question but the focal length was perfect for what I was doing the other day. How frustrating. Bit of a rant. But it happens I guess. Nothin' to share because of it

A friend from high school suggested I try out a change in art style. I kind of decided to give it a shot. The drawing itself depicts a familiar face in a setting not too familiar to what I usually draw. Drawn on a white index card (because I ran out of those blue ones) and was given the honor(?) of also being mostly in color. Accidentally stained... rrrgh... With some of the lyrics to this song written above it (it was severely stuck in my head that day) And a small drawing next to the lyrics that will be explained alongside that police-like badge from earlier... eventually. This is probably my most recent drawing. I obviously poured all my attention into it.

            •
Now used as my Steam avatar
I've been playing with eyes for a little while now, looking for a style that I like the most. So far I've got this going on. There's the embedded one and theprevious setup. My current goal is to reach, not necessarily a realistic style, but not too cartoony, and I'd rather not dip too far into a anime style.
First thing done is SAI btw, I am content
Because of that tutorial video I can now work faster. I did this in like 5 minutes. :) It's not perfectly well drawn. I did it rough because I wanted to test and try out this new method.

For anyone who has trouble coloring his drawing, watch this! This helped me out a lot! It's for paint tool Sai! Until now I always colored my pieces in a difficult way. But after watching this I feel so relieved that it can be done much easier!
