Art Hub

We often find ourselves discouraged by those that can do what we love better than us. We also often forget that they struggled and put a lot of work to be where they are now. One doesn't simply wake up one day and have been granted unsurpassed talent in any particular subject. The time old method of honing your craft is to practice. But sometimes that isn't enough. You need guiding hands. Support. Reassurance and peers to lean your shoulder on. In this thread you can discuss your art blocks, inspirations, favorite artists, share tutorials, and give your hand to your fellow artists. Whatever your niche may be, there's someone there to lend an ear and provide a step ahead. If you have tutorials/videos that may help or artists you find inspiring feel free to share them under the designated sub-thread. If you want to share your art without a critique say so when you post it. If you want one make sure to state that. Some personal guidelines I follow under the cut
1. Use References. Unless you know you've got the feel of something completely memorized by heart and hand you should always use a photo to help you. You will learn faster and with less frustration/pain. Even if you're doing a cartoon piece. Cartoons are simply real things simplified. 2. Do not ever learn anatomy from drawings. Art is often stylized and it's not always correct. While it's fine to learn style and carve out your own, studying anatomy from other artist's work will hazard fatal mistakes and minimize actual learning. 3. Keep your old doodles. Even if you hate them. You can either later reflect on them to see what you've learned, or as what's happened with me, look back at it and realize it was actually very good. You were only being hypercritical. Old drawings can be salvaged, reformed, or stylized into something magnificent. 4. Do not be discouraged by other artist's work! I cannot tell you how poisonous this is. I am guilty of it and from first hand experience can tell you how detrimental it is. Your work is an expression of yourself. Different art styles doesn't equal being better or worse than someone else. You can admire someone's style without copying or stripping away your own. Instead of being heart broken by "better" work you should learn from them. Ask them questions. Get advice or see how they view their art. Chances are they think they're nothing compared to the artists that they look up to. 5. Practice and feel good. Enjoy what you do. Don't force it or feel you need to draw/create as much as others. For almost all of us art is a hobby. Hobbies are meant to be enjoyed. Create what interests you even if it's not popular or will get everyone's attention. If you have an uncommon style those that indulge in it will appreciate it all the more. 6. Don't be afraid to experiment. You'll learn great things you never would have thought you were capable of.
_______________________________________________________________________ I am a SAI Paint Tool user. I have little to no advice about Photoshop! I am sorry. I also apologize if I haven't commented on everyone's stuff. I will get to it! (or I will at least "like" it so you know you're not forgotten) I've been very busy and I enjoy giving well thought out help instead of rushing it between work breaks.

  • My friend asked me to draw some emotions because he wants to draw good too, and he likes me to help him. I saved this one in particular because I think it has something... Something. Might use him as an appearance in a future worms comic. :)

    • Remember that WIP of Fodder? I finally finished him not too long ago. I'd like to thank this piece of concept art from Destiny for giving me the idea of how to do his lower body, though looking at it right now I probably should have moved the legs closer, or made them wider. On another note, he might have my best attempt at drawing a hand holding a pistol.

                • Decided to try and draw how I'd imagine my character to look in Windom's text RPG thread. It could probably use some better contrast but besides that I'm tempted to give some cuts you all might be familiar with me doing already to a few of my previous works.

                • ART HUB: I wanted to get a tattoo of a sea serpent/dragon amalgam(basically Jörmungandr) spiraling down my arm. I'm terrible at drawing and it would be awesome if the Flood would give me some drawings/ideas for inspiration or that I could use for my tattoo.

This started off as me first thinking of how the lower body would probably look for the already posted Fodder drawing. Then I drew the belt. Then I drew the middle portion for the torso Then I erased that attempt and tried it again. Then I added those two holder "straps". Now I'm thinking of making another person, but I'm not sure as to what that person should be like. (Help?)

Aaand let's finish off that day of taking pictures of old works made into board game pieces with the little army I kept in a battery box. At first it was just a specific four of them (try and guess which are those four), followed some more modern ones (one fell out of the box at some point, that guy is still MIA). One day while showing them off to my friends during lunch, one of them compared these guys to the cast of TF2. You can guess why I made most of the others. Some time later some students dropped some wooden cubes during an earlier lunch period, one dotted like a die. Needless to say: bootleg tf2 with those makeshift dice during lunch. Although that was also one of the last times I managed to draw the character with my usual style for legs at that small of a size.

                            • About to make 4 posts to Art Hub. First off will be the other 3 Junior year board game pieces, the middle one being inspired by Bastion and the other two being connected to the last 2 you might have seen earlier.

                              • I'm horrible when it comes to visual arts...but here are three drawings i've done.. And the fourth one I did from a picture I took in real life when a crow was perched on top of a church steeple. Sadly don't have the picture anymore, though. Like I said, i'm not a good visual artist, i'm more of a writer. I figure I might as well share something, though.
