I would bet they will handle it similar to how a few other games I have seen handled such an issue. The character would have a unique name and the gamer tag would be entered as a nickname for example.
My hunters if we get to a first and last name will be Kiara Malwani with the use of a nick the display name would be....
Kiara "xXNetCodeXx" Malwani.
Just how I forsee it being handled so that there is no confussion or conflict with merges or cross platform gaming. However I do not see cross platform gaming happening with destiny as MS has stated they wont allow it between xbone and the ps4. But they would with xbone and pc..

Yes, Microsoft has done things to upset fans, but it is really is too early to make any real judgment for either console. The name calling on both sides is so tremendously immature! We're all Bungie fans! Can't we just get along?!

Its not ment as derogatory in anyway just a shoter way to say xbox 1. Like playstation has always been PS playstation 2 has always been PS2 and playstation 3 has been PS3 the new playstation 4 is going to be PS4.
