Bungie has been pretty clear about the spaceships not being controllable. I agree with this decision. Consider this: In the space between planets, there's really no point in flying your own ship. You're probably traveling at some hypothetical faster than light speed, and there would be nothing to do. That only leaves orbital flight, and in-atmosphere flight. If they allowed in-atmosphere flight, it would negatively impact exploration in Destiny. Say there is some weapon hidden on the top of some mountain, and you have to trek up some overgrown trail to reach the summit. That could all be skipped if you can just fly up to the top. So the only place left to allow flight is in orbit around planets or other objects. But think about how sterile an environment that is. Sure the background will change, depending on where you are, but space is otherwise empty. There are no paths to follow, doors to unlock, treasures to find. The only activity of any real entertainment value would be dog fights. Now sure, a dog fight would be fun once or twice, but I don't think it's something people would end up going back to much. Not when there's a planet below you with loot to find.

Didn't say space flight. Control of our ships within the atmosphere and cutscenes for space travel is what I'm aiming for. I should probably should specify that..

  • My post covered in-atmosphere flight. Control in a cutscene? Wouldn't that make it not a cutscene?

Well light from the sun reaches the earth in 8 seconds so interplanetary travel anywhere near the speed of light wouldn't even be possible. Everything you said beyond that is opinionated. Just because you have the option to fly around doesn't cut the exploration factor at all dude. You're basically saying that using any vehicle is going to make you miss out, because you're not on foot and that just isn't true. Also, speaking from experience, dog fights are severely addictive if implemented properly.. How you not played Starhawk?

  •
Well light from the sun reaches the earth in 8 seconds so interplanetary travel anywhere near the speed of light wouldn't even be possible.
8 seconds implies no FTL? Why can't we fly for 8 seconds?
Everything you said beyond that is opinionated.
Well sure. We're on a forum. 90% of everything on here is opinion.
Just because you have the option to fly around doesn't cut the exploration factor at all dude. You're basically saying that using any vehicle is going to make you miss out, because you're not on foot and that just isn't true.
It most certainly could. The difference between ground vehicles and flight is that ground vehicles don't give you any additional degrees of freedom, just faster movement. You can still only move in two dimensions, save for however far you can jump. Simply having the vehicle doesn't give you access to more places, unless they are specifically designed to be reachable only by vehicle. Flight on the other hand allows you to move freely in a third dimension. Like I said in my example, you could completely skip the long trek up a mountain and just fly right up to the top.
Also, speaking from experience, dog fights are severely addictive if implemented properly.. How you not played Starhawk?
I have not played Starhawk, but I have played Freespace, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. But those games are specifically designed to be flight combat simulators. If you're playing them, you're in the mood to play a dog fight, and your in-game character, assuming there is some sort of progression, is based on dog fights. Destiny's character progression is about leveling up, and getting loot. If you're playing Destiny, that's what you're in the mood for. And I'll tell you, even if I could stay in orbit all day and fight waves upon waves of incoming ships, I'd want to go down to the planet and get my new gun. Then I'd want to use my new gun.
