Why do people worry about Global Warming?
Glaciologically, ice age implies the presence of extensive ice sheets in the northern and southern hemispheres. By this definition, we are still in the ice age that began 2.6 million years ago at the start of the Pleistocene epoch, because the Greenland, Arctic, and Antarctic ice sheets still exist.
We're still in the Ice Age. It's supposed to be warming up again. I just see it as some money making farce just like everything else is nowadays. Yeah, true the carbon levels are going up in the atmosphere, but look at China, nobody is dropping dead over there. Maybe evolution will kick in and our lungs will be more tolerable of the carbon in the air? meh.

  • It's not money involved--it's something far, far sinister. This is all a conspiracy run by big oil to discredit global warming. You see, the thing is that global warming is both real and intentional. The world needs to be heated up for the eventual lizardman apocalypse, and the lizardmen are secretely funding big oil to suit their climate needs. WAKE UP SHEEPLE

  • While I'll agree that the argument has been to politicized for its own good (the correlation between carbon dioxide increase and temperature increase actually broke 4 years ago, but mentioning this is career-suicide in academia), but your reasoning isn't that great.
It's supposed to be warming up again.
Yes, and according to the data it's warming up again at a highly accelerated rate.
but look at China, nobody is dropping dead over there.
Yes, people are. And that's to say nothing about the deaths caused by extreme weather and starvation thanks to crop failure caused by rapidly changing weather patterns.
Maybe evolution will kick in and our lungs will be more tolerable of the carbon in the air?
This statement shows you fundamentally don't understand evolution or climate change. Firstly, carbon dioxide doesn't harm humans so we don't need to be more tolerant of it, what we need to tolerate is surviving extreme weather patters (like hurricane sandy, or the record forest fires for example) and dealing with water scarcity. Secondly, evolution doesn't just 'kick in', because evolution is the end result of natural selection. That means that for a species to evolve a certain adaptation, every individual that lacks that adaptation must die. Think about that for a moment, for our species to evolve to tolerate more extreme conditions, everyone unfit to survive must be left to die.

  • Nobody's worried about global warming. They're worried about climate change. Also, sauce?

    • And if you've been paying attention you'll know that we've been warming at an accelerated rate compared to previous cycles. Unless, that is, you've been brainwashed by conservatards and their bullshit pseudo science and lies and taught to dismiss any claim to the contrary out of hand because it doesn't confirm your preset beliefs.

If its just a money making scheme why can't it go the other way? Surely there's more money to be made by drilling for fossil fuels than Al Gore made off of a -blam!-ing movie.

      • Actually, people are dropping dead from the air quality in China. There are several WHO estimates that prove the PRC are obscuring how bad the situation is over there. As far as why we should worry, our way of life depends on the status quo. Sure, if it happens next year from our excesses, or in 10,000 years as a result of natural forces, it still happens. But, the population, agriculture, medicine, etc...all rely on the weather being just about where it is. Now, when the mercury goes up those three dreaded degrees, millions and millions will die from starvation, since much of the African farm lands will dry up. You might be so cold hearted to say "Well, then maybe they shouldn't have so many kids" but more people (I hope) won't have lost their humanity, and see them as people, and want to help. But, you say, I live in the West. Europe, Britain, the USA, we have all the farmland we need. Not so fast. Remember your history lessons. The Dustbowl in the 30's drastically reduced produce in the US. It also displaced hundreds of thousands of farmers. This would almost certainly happen again. Look at what the current drought is doing to beef farmers as what the pattern would look like. So, the changes that will happen aren't for the best, and they aren't inevitable.

      • Maybe because people who live near the sea, on islands or in Florida don't want to be underwater?
