It broke cannon. Omashu, anyone? Giant mole creatures?
Edit:
It's been cleared up.

The lion turtles gave people the power but demanded it back after they were done using it. After Wan, they said they were no longer going to give people the power to bend, it's assumed they learned from the animals afterwards.

Edited by lonepaul2441: 10/22/2013 1:14:24 AMErm that episode claimed it was a legend mate, a fairy tale of how earthbending started and how the tunnel was created which turn out to be made by the giant moles. It makes more sense for lion turtles to give the power to humans since Aang was able to take it away by being given the power from one. After reading the wiki it also says in the trivia "Since Oma and Shu were the first human earthbenders, they lived in the era before the Avatar; therefore, Omashu could even be older than the first Avatar. Jeez, gotta do reading to figure these things out.

or pay attention and work it out yourself. The story largely tells you what is going on at one point or another.

Look, I've seen all the episodes and believed that there was a discrepancy in the background. It was cleared up and I was corrected. What part of that do you have a problem with?

I wasn't having a go at you...... sorry

It's all good.

I don't actually remember seeing earthbenders in the episode. He got the ability, but it may not have been discovered by others yet.

I think he got it around the point where he was talking about the rush of power Raava gives him. When he dies, he's leaning on one of those throwing discs the earthbenders use.
