Fossil collectors in here?

I'm not much of a fossil hunter. I collect agates, jasper, and obsidian found in the area. Because of the glaciers, we don't even have a whole lot of fossils to find here. While looking for gemstone, I came across some rocks interesting enough to save, all containing a weird patterns on them. The pattern is a track made out of a series of crescents that look a lot like if you took the edge of a grinder and ran it across the rock. I did some digging to find out what they were, and found out those are the fossil remains of cyanobacteria colonies. They are in the ballpark of 2 billion years old, some of the oldest fossils on Earth. It is pretty neat to find something with that kind of connection to the past. I've studied up on fossils in the area and I'm going to try to find more. Anyone else collect fossils around home? What have you found?

  • Not much of a fossil hunter, but I study geology and I'm going to do it at uni. My friends and I went down to Kimmeridge Bay in Dorset, UK. It's part of the Jurassic coastline so there were loads of ammonites in the limestones there, but not many fossils to pick up unfortunately :( where do you live?
