How do sin(x) and cos(x) work?

When I enter cos(45) into a calculator, what calculations are being made? And don't say 1/sec(x) or equivalent trig. identities.

Put simply, you cannot calculate it by hand. A calculator does it through a very complicated iterative process. You can estimate with a series (Taylor or Maclaurin), but those are approximations.
