How do sin(x) and cos(x) work?

When I enter cos(45) into a calculator, what calculations are being made? And don't say 1/sec(x) or equivalent trig. identities.

  • To put it very simply, sine is basically the number of the opposite side of your angle over the hypotenuse of the triangle, while cosine is is the adjacent side of your angle over the hypotenuse of the triangle.
