Mass Effect 4 Story Doesn't Relate to the Shepard Trilogy in Any Way.
Mass Effect 4’s story will not touch upon the events of the original story in the slightest, BioWare has revealed. Discussing the upcoming sci-fi RPG’s plot with Complex, Mass Effect 3 writer Marc Walters said, “Well, I can’t get into details, but the idea is that we have agreed to tell a story that doesn’t relate necessarily to any of the Shepard events at all, whatsoever. “That’s what we’ve been deciding for a while. But throughout it all, one of the key things is that it has to be Mass Effect. It can’t just feel like a spin-off. It has to feel like a Mass Effect game at its heart, at its core. Just without the Shepard character or the Shepard specific companions.”
Is it possible that we could be looking at the start of a new trilogy? I sure hope so!

    • i still think a garrus spinoff would have been cool. Can you think of any other supporting character that has better dialogue and personality than the main character of a game?

      • Make it as awe inspiring as Mass Effect 2, that's all I ask.

There will end up being Shepard references if it isn't put at an earlier timeline. It would be like not having the Master Chief in Halo.

      • Bullshit. They always say something like this. I don't think Shepard's gonna be a playable character at all, but to even leave out a namedrop or a brief mention is absurd to not do. They built an entire universe with that character, they're gonna be in the game one way or another.

        • I'm really not sure what the story could possibly be about, will they be cliché and do one about the Leviathans post ME3 (somehow) or will they do a prequel in the cycle that ME Trilogy takes place in? If they do a prequel it'd be awfully hard to top the Reapers are the main threat, anything else would just seem kind of boring unless they went REALLY far back and did a prequel in an entirely different cycle.

        • It would be neat if the game was focused on the expansion of the Prothean Empire. Maybe play as a Prothean soldier or the Protheans are the enemies.

        • I hope they buff up the multiplayer. I really enjoyed it with my friends, but it does get sorta stale after awhile.

        • To make this possible, it HAS to be a prequel. How the hell could you make a sequel and not have ANY reference to the original trilogy?

          • This confuses me. Do they mean that it won't take place after ME3 or that it will take place after ME3 just with no Shephaard related cameos?

          • Well, that keeps it on the store shelves for me. They had a good opportunity to give us some insights at the un-stable galaxy after the events of the crucible, and wrap up all the crap they left out for us in the process. I was skeptical when when I heard they were making 4, because they always talked of ending the series after 3. And if they had done well with 3 I would have been fine and content. But they didn't. And, much like the Indoctrination theory, where they had the opportunity to recover from a potential mistake and make a big ass move that hasn't been done in gaming before, they've passed up the opportunity again, to tell a story in the post crucible firing galaxy, which is still a very turbulent time. If I had to guess it's because they would have to choose a canon ending to base things around, which would slap whoever has whatever particular ending ingrained into them as the canon one. I'm so pleased they didn't want to step on the toes of the two or three people that enjoyed the original endings.

          • I want it to be set in an AU. Take the Galaxy before ME1 but this time there are no Reapers. This time, the Protheans did build the relays and disappeared without a trace for an unspecified reason. Then, you can tell stories in the universe without the constant Reaper threat looming over everything.

            •
It has to feel like a Mass Effect game at its heart, at its core.
No idea how they're going to nail that because the Mass Effect series has been totally awful at nailing a definitive tone. Mass Effect 1 set the table perfectly, but then following games and novels have been in a constant state of change.

So their goal is to make Mass Effect 4 using the universe canon, but without using anything Shepard ever did. I hope we get to play as an alien race.

Can you have a Mass Effect game without Shepherd? It's gonna be weird without him/her.
