Has the government shutdown directly affected you yet?

It happened to me today. For a lot of my nuke classes, we use government databases for tabulated information on neutron and photon cross sections. The websites that host these databases have all been shutdown. This means that I actually had to physically track down an ancient thing called a "book" to do my homework today. It didn't even give links to the studies/methodologies that were used to get the data. Mark my words; someone is going to pay for this.

  • The company that I do marketing for provides software engineering services for defense and aerospace. We make sure that the flight control computer software is up to FAA or DoD/Mil standards. So, YES the shutdown is effecting me. Albeit not directly. When the DoD puts a stop-work on orders for new drone, planes and computer systems, the companies my engineers work for halt the work on those projects. While their internal employees retain their pay, what do you think happens to the 1099 contractors? If you said that they go home and don't bill for their time, you are correct. The last week we've been paying out, but not bringing anything in. If it goes for much longer I will need to tap out and find other work. I have to make sure the engineers stay around, because without them, we have no company.
