Great thread.
And to answer the "main topic" I have to say I feel that abortion should be allowed for any reason up to a certain time frame, say 12-16 weeks.
However that does not mean I agree with them on a moral level in the slightest.

So a question, what is your view on the problem of it for population. As there has been a strange increase in ratio in boys to girls in Indian parents. Where the third child is most likely a boy. Anyway there have been many ways to combat this as shown in this article from education or making abortion harder. Another belief is to not allow doctors to tell their patient the gender of their kids.
-
I'd say the way to combat this is to eliminate gender roles, you know "women have to do A, B and C" and "Males have to do X, Y and Z" The gender roles are making males more preferable in these countries ergo people are more likely to have males.
-
It's not a case of "men/women have to do x for no reason", it's more like "men/women do x because men/women are better at it"
-
Not exactly true, its also based on how our society was built.
-
Our society made men naturally stronger and thus more suited to tasks like manual labour? Alrighty then
-
Yes but society is changing and soon tgis difference will be useless with technological advancement. As well natural abilities mean nothing compared to skill.
-
Though this will take time, and most is heavily put into tradition. For me the best choice is to not allow parents know of the gender. This then stops it in the short term. The Gender role problem will take time, and need alot of talking and pushing to fix. In India or Egypt etc. women are considered as tools, for sex, and have been known for being harassed many times, -blam!- even in brutal measures which include shoving a pole down the vagina. This will take alot of time to fix.
-
But not telling them the gender of the baby untill it's past the legal date for abortion is just an extremely short term solution and doesn't stop harassment and general treatment of females in those societies. Sure it stops an abortion but it doesn't stop the female being harassed and treated like shit when she's born. I'm guessing you've heard about the infamous story of a young girl being hit by a van in china and no one giving a shit?
-
That is true, but the point of this is that it should be a stop gap, until we can slowly by slowly increase public perception and fix cultures. After all only one solution will not work, but multiple solution hitting the same problem could in the long term fix it. After all complaining about their daughter will make them look bad. And then slowly by slowly they will come to accept it and the next generation due to education can fix themselves. Also the parents can be made to change their minds later on as well.

I suppose not letting females be aborted for being female is a good first step, but it doesn't stop the overall issue. It's a small stepping stone, but alot more work is necessary.
