It's just not a big issue over here, people are on the whole pretty damn happy with the system <.< It costs more to get Private healthcare than to go with the NHS, everyone chips in a smaller amount and everyone gets free healthcare. It's better for everyone who can't afford private healthcare, which is still a sizeable market here but far too expensive for anyone earning a basic salary, let alone minimum wage workers or those on Zero hours contracts.
everyone chips in a smaller amount

everyone gets free healthcare
You can't have both of these.
-
*sigh* I -blam!-ing hate semantics. Everyone gets free at the point of access healthcare, you don't pay to go and see the doctor but you pay for the NHS as a part of your regular taxes.
-
I'd rather pay for my own healthcare than be forced to pay for it at gunpoint.
-
It's not at gunpoint, it comes out of your regular taxes. We don't spent such absurd amounts of money on our military so it's afforded without any special taxes or levys. It's no different from paying for the upkeep of the roads or the police force.
-
It's not at gunpoint.
If I don't pay those taxes, I go to jail. If I refuse to go to jail, I'm hunted and then held at gunpoint until I'm put under arrest.
-
I'm really hoping this is a joke.
-
Not really, no. The joke here is Obamacare and the lack of universal healthcare in the USA.
-
Well over here the NHS is just one big joke, its underfunded and full of people neglecting patients.
-
Over here being the UK? I'm also from there. The NHS is underfunded and being cut to death by the tory tossers, the patient neglect is a serious problem, but it's being made out to be worse by the media coverage. A lot of it comes down to the nurses being ridiculously overstretched, people who abuse patients for sadism should be shot rather than being fired. I wouldn't trade the NHS for anything though, it needs more investment and funding to bring it up to scratch but that keeps being put off because it will cost a lot up front but the returns aren't as obvious and immediate so mid-recession it's low on the priority list.
