Why a private beta?

Why would Bungie release a private beta only accessible by pre-order? Is this simply a money-grubbing move? Why not invite the whole wide world to try this new genre and break it?

  • Reach technically had a private beta and that one went over pretty well. (it was the biggest beta in history)

  • I assume they want some amount of investment and commitment from the players that are testing the game. This Beta isn't some demo that you download, play for five minutes, then move on to the next free thing, it's a chance for fans to help Bungie polish the final game experience by simply doing what we do best.

    • I'd rather it be tested by the fans who can give constructive criticism on how to improve the game, not just anybody who can pick up a controller. Do you really want people coming on this forum saying: "hey guys. i just downloded the dstny beta and i think it wud be sooo cool if u cud 360 noscope liek in cod they shud add horses n stuff 2 bcuz that wud b siiiiiccckkkk blops 2 had horses n that game wuz tight lol"

      • I had no problem putting 5 down to he my beta code. This is the top game on my list and If I developed a game, I would want people who really want this game ad want it to be great to be the ones giving feedback. That way I could improve and tweak things before it was released.

      • See the Beta being exclusive as a gift to loyal members of the community who are envolved enough to spend money on the game before it comes out just to be playing since day one. Betas aren't a demo for every player out there. This isn't about marketing, it's about testing the actual game and getting it ready for the launch date. Also, yo can't forget that the Beta isn't just free for Bungie. It implies a lot of investment on money, time, and many employees being focused on it. They need to secure they are at least covering the costs of the whole Beta, plus it's a great way to lure players to buy the game and get them involved as soon as possible in the community and development of the game.

      • Economics. It limits the amount of players. Day one of the Beta will probably cause several servers to explode anyways without the weight of the world on them.

      • I think you mean "money-grabbing" move, but regardless, an invite-only beta means there is measurable interest in the beta and the servers can be prepared to expect and manage the number of players. An open beta means a far larger player base can access the beta, which could be detrimental to the testing phase, as it may strain the servers too much.

        • of course it is... Why else put it in there. They want inflated numbers before release date is set. Plus I am guessing they will assume people who WANT to play to the game will jump at the early opportunity to dig in and test the games/systems. The more eyes the better, but with a few more hard core fans might help find little nicks they missed before. Just a thought. Plus MONEY REIGNS SUPREME
