Stand By Me.
It was a Stephen King story called 'The Body' before it was a movie.

Brilliant film. For me, a very close contender with what immediately came to mind - Blade Runner, from 'Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep'. A rare case of an adaptation being almost universally considered better than the book, and the book was no bad show either.

Indeed. I LOVED Ridley Scott's adaptation of Dick's book. But, for me, Stand By Me seemed more real. It felt like kids on an adventure. You started out identifying with those kids, and you felt like you were growing up by the end. Very few movies can do something like that.

Yeah, really poignant but also joyful. I re-watched it about a month ago for the first time in literally 20+ years, and I wept at the end. I suppose part of that was also down to knowing the real fate of River Phoenix, who was exceptionally talented.

He was. The curse of the child star.
