Yes. The Magnetosphere protects planets from solar flares and other harmful rays. Many scientists believe that the reason Mars has no atmosphere is that that it was blown away by solar wind when the planets' plate tectonics stopped and the magnetosphere vanished.

  • OK, but does the magnetosphere keep the atmosphere intact, or can an atmosphere exist without the presence of a magnetosphere?

  • There's no direct link between the two, in particular. Think of the atmosphere as a person, the magnetosphere as a shield, and stars as constantly-shooting archers. As long as the planet is far enough away from a powerful celestial body, the atmosphere can exist without a magnetosphere, although that circumstance only usually happens on rogue planets.

  • Burninator was spot-on. As for your question, yes, it's possible to retain an atmosphere without a magnetosphere. Most celestial bodies in the solar system, like the moons of the gas giants, have thin but detectable atmospheres (Titan, a moon of Saturn, actually has a very thick atmosphere), despite not having active cores. However, unless there's is some natural/artificial way for the gases to be replenished, the atmosphere will (Over a very long time) be withered away by solar wind.
