An Activity for Every Mood?

Normally my threads are speculative and overly optimistic, but I need some help with this one... Bungie continues to focus on pillars of their game design, one of them being: "we want to have an activity for every mood." They mention it all the time. The problem with that is when you said you have an open world and "an activity for every mood", people start taking wild stabs in the dark. I have considered so many things that Bungie could mean by this: altering the environment (like Forge), purchasing property homes and items to fill it, participating in random community events, etc. I know these are MMO-ish ideas, but it's hard not to think that way when Bungie phrases it as such. But video after video, interview after interview, it seems like the pillar should say "we want to have an activity (with a gun) for every mood". It seems like our options are less MMO and more FPS: shoot by yourself, shoot with your friends, shoot with strangers, shoot strangers. I'm not trying to be a Debby Downer here and I really hope I'm wrong, but how is Destiny going to be any different than Halo? Halo had all of those features, and I guess I'm waiting to see how Destiny is going to be different/better than what we have already experienced. Please no fan-boy flaming. I am a huge Bungie fan and have already pre-ordered Destiny, I just want to have a realistic conversation about what this Pillar really means.

  • It would be easier to see what they meant by this if they have examples instead of repeatedly showing us the same old Russia video. That said we still have a while before the game comes out.

  • You are just over thinking a simple phrase. Every mood aka. You want play alone, co-op, pvp, hardcore gaming, exploration, trading guns and showing off your characters and socializing in the city, main quests, side quests, group events. Etc

    • The exploration and reclamation of humanities former glory will be what differentiates it. Exploration hasn't really been touched on yet in any of the published or released material so far. I suspect they are keeping this info back very deliberately. Shooting first and foremost, but shooting as it arises via exploration. I also don't think that the background lore discovered thusly will consist of explicit exposition, but rather implicit, leaving it to us to puzzle out large blocks of it. Caveat; I could be way off here, no matter.

      • I know what you mean, they really need to elaborate on this. Yes, clearly the shared-world-shooter concept, seamlessly popping up in each other's adventures, is going to be pretty awesome and original. But just how many activities/ things to do will actually be implemented? Because of our lack of info on this subject, you can only speculate. And those who are super pumped for this game (like me!) may speculate too far and get their own hopes up too high.

I am not expecting destiny to be grand theft auto so my expectations aren't as high when it comes to the activities. I'm more interested to see just how much bungie has grown and how many new and refreshed ideas were played with and incorporated, how they incorporated all that knowledge. I guess im looking to see just what we should expect from bungie now that they no longer have Microsoft. I feel destiny will show how much potential there is to bungie surviving as a brand.

If after all the interviews and blog posts and articles written you still don't see the difference... IDK. Maybe Bungie should just post a venn diagram on their homepage.
Bungie continues to focus on pillars of their game design, one of them being: "we want to have an activity for every mood." They mention it all the time. They keep reiterating that it is a "Shared World Shooter," with an emphasis on the Shooter part, and not an MMO. When I first heard the "something for every mood" jargon, I automatically assumed it was something for every mood to do with guns. Hunting, practicing, fighting, crafting/upgrading, but other things like walking around, trading, working on your space ship. Not once have I ever considered Destiny an MMO, yes, it does have MMO-esque features, but what I take from that is it is a Large Open World, Bungie throws in thousands of players that can choose/not choose wether or not to engage in the Shared World Shooter features. When people think of Destiny, they need to just drop the whole MMO thing, it is not an MMO, and Bungie has reiterated this several times.
But video after video, interview after interview, it seems like the pillar should say "we want to have an activity (with a gun) for every mood". Destiny is much different than Halo, how does Halo have all the features Destiny does? It doesn't.
Please no fan-boy flaming. I am a huge Bungie fan and have already pre-ordered Destiny, I just want to have a realistic conversation about what this Pillar really means.
At no point in the above comments was I Fanboy Flaming. Realistically, if you want to discuss what that Pillar means, you have to throw MMO out of the window.
