I am pretty fit myself (as I do Parkour/Freerunning regularly and had been a gymnast and a high-level hockey player for quite some time), I still don't agree with what you're saying. My point of view, is this: I don't think humans were meant to be physically adept. If we were, we'd be the superior species on the planet from a physical standpoint. We are the superior species, but no based on physical condition. What makes us dominant, is our intellect. So instead of, I don't know, wasting your time at the gym, it might be better to sharpen your mind with more and more knowledge. Don't get me wrong, doing physical activities are great fun, but I don't think if you aren't physically adept than you're "doing it wrong". Mind>body. Just my two cents.

  • Or, you know, you can excel in both.
You literally just said you shouldn't waste your time at the gym. I was saying you could just as easily excel in the gym and excel in the classroom. Lifting weights and studying aren't mutually exclusive. I do.

  • I agree. But I was just telling OP that saying that people who don't work out at the gym "aren't doing it right" isn't the right thing to do. People are usually either extreme about physical or extreme about mental. I agree a healthy balance is desirable.

  • Be extreme at both, screw balances.

Of course, studies have shown that regular exercise helps combat dementia and sharpen your mind.

  • That doesn't mean if you "don't gym" "you're not doing it right". Walking is considered exercise. So as long as you're walking everyday you've met that criteria.

  • Mediocre exercise. Why be mediocre when you can excel at every aspect of your life?

  • You can't. One aspect of your life will always be mediocre, and even if its not, you're always going to have drawbacks. I know this kid, and his story kind of fits in this conversation. Anyways, the kid is really good looking. He's got the six pack, the attitude, the girls. He's one of the most physically adept kids I know. He also happens to be brilliant. He misses a couple of days of school and he uses his brain to work out problems like its nothing. Everything he does he excels at almost immediately. He started playing piano in January, now he is composing music for the school's band. But that's at a cost. His abilities spoil him, to the point where he can't stay focused on an activity for a very long time. Since he's so inclined to do well, he figures he doesn't need to work towards what he wants, and that it'll just come to him when he wants it. This variable affects his personality with other people, especially with girls. He flirts with girls, and he wants them when he doesn't have them, but as soon as they want him, he doesn't care. And then it makes him feel so depressed because he was basically toying with those girls. So see, this is why you can't be above average in everything. Because even if you are, you aren't.
