Then so is cottage cheese. Dead Srs.
1) Milk is heated up and pasteurized
2) The curds are removed to make cottage cheese.
3) What is left over is whey protein.
It's then filtered for impurities and dried into a powder, and then ready to be packaged.
It's extracted at the same step as cottage cheese, but I assume you have nothing against cottage cheese right?

Except protein powders have a ton of added preservatives and a f.uckload of maltodextrin. WHEY is extracted at the same process of CC but the things that happen afterward to make it into the chocoaltey tub of grossness are best left unsaid.
