Polygon count in character/object models in Destiny

Now i'm not one to gripe or moan, but I'm finding it a little odd that a game which looks so beautiful in some screenshots can have some elements seem half-finished in others. Do not get me wrong, I am more excited about Destiny than anyone I know IRL and I cannot wait at all to get my grubby paws on it but I just see screenshots like this one, and look at the gun barrels (and lights etc) on the front of the Devil Walker.. And I can't help but notice they are hexagonal rather than round like I imagine the concept art for the vehicle would be. I know these are very early on screenshots and that everything else in Destiny looks absolutely amazing but it's little things like that that I would expect to not see any more in games these days. I know i've been spoilt by beautiful games like Battlefield and Crysis but I just want Destiny to be as jawdropping as it can be. I'm sure I won't notice these in game and i'll have no problem with it but I just wondered if anyone else thought the same? Try not to hate or flame me for my opinion, just politely disagree and state your reason please folks!

  • I hope we get some form of tessellation. If Cod: Ghosts can do it, so can Destiny.

    • I completely agree. I noticed a low poly count on a lot of other things as well.

    • Destiny is only in its pre-alpha and alpha stages (depending on which area you are looking at). It is a ways off from being finished.

      • Two words: Pre-Alpha. ...wait... ...that's one hyphenated word... Anyway,yeah- we are OVER A YEAR AWAY from Release. What we saw at E3 was likely rushed together to even be SHOWABLE, let alone POLISHED.

        • Well thats much up to the hardware isnt it? Soo if youre afraid of bad resolution Buy a rig with Four NV Titans in 4SLI and blow up the rez to 7680x1600 on three screens *lol* That would satisfy most i think, i'll see for myself what im gona buy, maybe, maybe not, got to get rid of the car first ;D If destiny is makin it to PC, well then graphics and experiencewise i know what system gona kick ass!, but i'll play with a controller anyways!

Where are these hexagons you speak of.... EDIT: I see what you're griping about now. All I have to say is- REALLY? That's what's bugging you... I needed a microscope to see what you were talking about.

I wholeheartedly agree. Destiny is the worst looking fantastic looking game I've ever seen. The quality in direct and ambient light is fantastic, the textures and materials look like they are physically lit with convincing specular highlights and reflections depending on the material. Bungie's problem has always been in how detailed these physical objects actually are. Characters and objects have very simple, clean silhouettes - an absence of physical detail that no pixel shader can fill (unless that shader supports tessellation or displacement mapping of some sort). Things like the Guardians having no proper layering or extrusion to elements such as overlapping cloth or layers of clothing/straps/metal. The very best character work they've done was in Reach, where at the time and on the system the models were very nicely detailed and carried this very clean look to them, a step-up from the blocky, very low poly models of Halo 3. Armor designs for the Covenant were sleek and had great form, while the Spartans had a particularly utilitarian look to their armor, with great proportion and some outstanding designs. In Destiny, that same level of detail has been more or less carried over. Texture resolution has improved, so we get really sharp looking foliage and physical materials, but the density and detail of physical objects simply doesn't cut it (unless they're very close, where they implement some sort of tessellation, particularly visible on the great looking weapons up close). All things considered it still looks great, but has the same downfall in its visual presentation that Halo 3 had.

              • Maybe the reason it looks half finished is because it is. The game is still pre-alpha, give Bungie a break.

              • I had to look really, really close to see what you were talking about.
