I suspect that "nothing is ever lost, only hidden from view."
With that said, IF there is a edit history, I would imagine that the web-team would reserve the ability to view-review it. It's a control thing.

Once someone posts a comment or thread, they're already accepting the fact that their thoughts will be public. Therefore, I don't see why editing the post should hide their original ideas. It also stops users from posting "lol what did the OP say b4?"

Agreed. Perhaps in a later version of the site, we might have limited access to such a feature, if it exists.
