This patent was filed last year, and it was big news then too. It's important to note that companies - all companies - file patents for things that they never use. Apple holds some pretty insane patents, and I don't just mean the "black rectangle". Still, let's say this were going to be implemented right nao. Here's how I'm assuming it would work. So you and a ladyfriend are settling down with some popcorn and you decide to watch a movie. You have a couple options. You can buy it for full price, you can rent it for a set price... or you can rent it at a per-view charge. Intrigued, you select the per-view option. What you're presented with is a deal: the movie distributor will loan you that movie for less money, on the condition that only a set amount of people watch it. And they can set prices even lower, because they know only a set number of people are going to watch it. So you say great, it's only the two of us watching, so I'll choose that option. Kinect verifies that there are, in fact, two people watching and starts the movie. The lights dim, you get cozy, and... ...Then mom walks in "just to see how everyone is doing". Kinect says hey now, looks like there are 3 people in front of the TV, and that violates the contract you had made. So it pauses the movie and pops up a message: "It looks like you have more than 2 people watching: would you like to add another person for $0.99?". You hit [No] as fast as humanly possible, and the Kinect pops up another message: "Movie will resume when 2 people are watching". You shoo your mom out of the room, and the movie automatically starts playing. Two minutes later, your girlfriend is asleep. Goddammit. But yeah. It's not really a case of you paying them full price... and then they still limit you. They just have more flexibility in pricing because they know how many people are getting the content. Still, how low can you go? Netflix is just $8 for unlimited streaming, which still blows my mind.

It is, they filed for the patent a while back. It seems that you don't own shit after you give them money.

        • Just because they claim the tech doesn't mean it'll be used. They just want to make sure that if someone does want to use it, MS will get a cut of the profits because they own the idea. It's the same reason Sony patented a method of preventing used games from being played on a PS4, but aren't including it in the system.

        • They misunderstood the patent filing. Its impossible for the kinect sensor to detect how many people are watching, people could just point the sensor to a wall or off to the side so it looks like only one person is present. "The limitation may comprise a number of user views, a number of user views over time, a number of simultaneous user views, views tied to user identities, views limited to user age or any variation or combination thereof, all tied to the number of actual content consumers allowed to view the content." thats straight from the patent description, it just seems like an option to rent a movie lets say, for either one view or multiple views within a certain time frame, or allow multiple accounts to access the rented movie. Stop getting your panties in a knot

whether it's true or not just another reason not to get an Xbox One for me unless MS actually debunks this stuff. Can't believe fanboys are still defending this console lol Forgot to mention, this implies the Kinect MUST be facing you which I would never want.

There's just too much negativity and distrust on this console true or not. It's going to be a long haul for Microsoft on this product and regaining some trust apparently. The insane notion in the article leads to a more insane reaction the minute someone gets a fee for watching NFL with his buddies will be the moment Microsoft opens the gate on consumer backlash and I'm not talking about forum goers but out of the larger silent majority whom won't be very silent for long.

There's some dumb people in this world, but this is just ridiculous. What is Microsoft trying to do, take over the world?

          • Can't just tape something in front of the Kinect 2.0?

            • I don't think they would do that because they aren't stupid. They know that would ruin their market.

            • This reminds me of something awhile ago that was rumored to be started with the 360's streaming service. I don't remember where i read it (I had a friend that was telling me about it as well) but the article was saying that M$ had plans to charge people more money for movies depending on how many people are present in the room watching the movie (all of this being done with Kinect of course) so I'm not entirely doubting this.

                • Anyone care to explain to me what the -blam!- is going through M$'s head currently. Lets make our next gen product as unappealing as possible so no one wants the -blam!-ing thing.
