When did you first realize what faith you were?

When I was about 9, I wanted to watch Harry Potter but my grandmother wouldn't let me, when I asked her why she said that it was because it had talking snakes in it which meant it was honoring the devil. Unfortunately for my grandmother my young mind interpreted this as saying "You have to choose between religion and snakes." As a looked at a framed picture of Jesus later that day, I suddenly thought to myself; 'Do you know what's cooler than some dead guy? Snakes.' So what was your first revelation? When did you first think "Hey, I'm a(n) ______."

  • To tell you the truth, I really don't stop and think about such things. I don't really have any faith in anything. I don't waste time on wondering if there is or is not a god.

  • I never took church seriously, but it took until first grade (so ~6?) for me to acknowledge to myself that what they were teaching was probably wrong.

  • Religion has never made sense to me. Even as a kid I found the entire practice extremely odd. As I grew older and started to realize I was being lied to about other things that seemed far too convenient i.e. Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny, I thought to myself, "There must not be a god either."

  • In the last year I became atheist. I went through some bad things that made god seem nonexistent or an ass. I decided to go with the former and just give up in believing in one entirely.

    • The only time I really believed in a god was when I was I think six or seven and younger. After that I just stopped caring about the whole thing at all, so I would guess that would make me an atheist. Although it's not so much blatant disbelief but more so general indifference. But going half way and saying agnostic is bull so I'm just going with atheist.

i was baptized Anglican at a young age, and I've pretty much remained that way since. but over the years I've definitely had different degrees of faith, ranging from going-to-church-every-Sunday to not-going-to-church-at-all. Lately I've come to the realization that God is more of a metaphor, a symbol of every thing good in humanity. then i thought, "hey, isn't being humble on of those good things? if god is humble, why would he (if god can/be called a he) want to be worshiped? for that matter, why would he NEED to be worshiped?" so now i say faith, and belief in a higher power is fine, but organized religion is somewhat useless. this has led me to be very, very accepting of people of other ethnicity's and religions, because i no longer am set in the ways of "Christianity 4 lyf!" EDIT: also, i'm sorry if you don't agree with what i just wrote. i generally don't engage in this sort of thing over the internet, because it nearly always sparks an argument (at least in my experience) and its much better to have discussion like this in person. this happened with me and my best friend. hes much more devout than i am, and after i posted some thing (admittedly it was verrry offensive) he broke out an argument. on facebook. we went back and forth in the comments for a day (off and on) when i eventually said, "alright, if we continue this, one of us is sure to get misunderstood. lets meet up tomorrow and discuss this in person so we don't do anything rash.

      • Born and being raised a Catholic. I've had a bit of a shock value come middle school a few years ago, and I hadn't been to church for middle school. Come freshman year and I started to go back to church and since then I've had a lot of epiphanies about life. Sure there are some assholes who are like "lol flying spaghetti monster have fun with ur imaginary frnd" but there are also religious people who can do the same thing. I personally believe that you shouldn't hate something/someone just because they're different, you keep to your business and them theirs. I am a Catholic, but I have my own spin on it as well.

I was about 6 years old and I had never been to church before. I was staying down at my grandpa's house for the weekend so he took me with him to church (unsure what denomination of Christianity). I had brought my Velociraptor and Sam Neill action figures from Jurrasic Park to play with. Apparently the Sunday school teacher thought dinosaurs are just an example of god trolling humanity and the she gave me an earful about how dinosaurs were just lies etc. etc. That was the first time I ever thought "This person is a nut job!" about anyone.

      • I don't know. I've never been that into religion, although I did believe in God as a kid. I think it was my early teens when I became agnostic, and then atheist a few years later.

      • ~16. Only because I was not very informed about my religious views before then, I'd always technically identified as a Christian before that but I hadn't thought about it too much.

I am a Panendeist, or somebody who believes in Panendeism. It's the belief that the universe is part of God, but not all of God, and that this God is laissez-faire when it comes to human interaction. When I couldn't get into any well-known organized religion, I thought I was an Atheist, but I couldn't bring myself to accept that this vast universe was just random chance. There's so much beauty and good that's overshadowed by malice and evil that we think that a God has left us or has never existed at all. Or that because we have science proving how we came about, that this completely disproves a greater being planning out these systems and laws of life that we have been built upon. Life is not just black and white... ...man. TL;DR I believe there's a concept of God. He's a cool spirit and doesn't afraid of anything. This happened around...end of sophomore highschool year.

      • I was raised Catholic. When I was a teen, I thought about my faith a lot, and decided to stay with it. Figured there was something more to life, and my faith offered an answer. So yeah, I believe in a Jewish carpenter zombie. Deal. @OP: Seriously, you weren't allowed to watch Harry Potter? It was one of our novel studies in Grade 6, and I was in Catholic school.
