Find a vinyl cutter and use that do create a decal. It'll look 100% better than painting. If you do want to paint, buy an old/spare casing, make a template and see how spraying it works (make sure your technique is good).
Sources - I custom painted and airbrushed my DS phat last year after I broke the hinge.

If I did a decal, would I just gloss over it to get it to stay on the case? Like, my biggest problem right now is just getting i to stick without feeling awkward. I don't want to worry about it peeling either. With painting, I'd just spray through a stencil.

Proper vinyl will just stick fast - it won't be perfect but if you aren't rough with it it should work ok. I can't quite remember what I did when I airbrushed my DS casing, I might've gone over it in some kind of sealant once I was done (but that was all painted, no vinyl).

If I could find a way to seal it, I would just order swirl decals, put it on the hood, and put the seal or gloss or whatever over top of it. That way the only thing that'll actually get painted/dyed would be the buttons. My issue at that point would be finding the right place to order a decal and finding a way to seal it to the system permanently (or at least a good 3 years till it shows any wear). Decal cutters are expensive.

I don't know if you'd seal over a decal. Do some research :)
