Confidence can only be earned through real accomplishments. If it it given to make someone feel good then it will only end in ruin in the end.

I've had personal experiences that disagree. I'm pretty good at math and whenever a math test comes around instead of studying like crazy I study a little bit and give myself a confidence boost to motivate me. My high school math teacher always told our class that students who received positive compliments actually scored 20% on their tests. It's a confidence boost.
