There's your problem. Hire a professional, it doesn't matter if they cost more. You're not being ripped off with the quality of the work with them.

Doesn't take a genius to stain a fence, and I figured since high school kids have a hard time finding summer jobs nowadays I'd be a helpful citizen and throw them a bone. Doesn't seem to be working out well.
