Ok, let's discuss the Nextbox and the bull crap that surrounds it

For those of you haven't read the IGN article yet, here it is. From here on out, everything is IN MY OPINION. So take what you want from this thread. PROS:
1) No entertainment console. There should only be the 1 console in a new generation. An "entertainment Xbox" would basically be an "Xbox TV." Why would I pay $300 (rumored price) for an "Xbox TV" when I can just buy a Roku, Apple TV, or Google TV, which are all $100 or less.

2) Blu-Ray.

3) Operating system is a core version of Windows 8. What this will do is tie both the Nextbox and your Windows 8 PC together. Now what will Microsoft do with this? I dunno.

4) November 2013 release.
CONS:
1) Always-on connection. I know that to SOME of you guys this isn't a big deal, but it's a MUCH bigger deal than you think. It's much more than not being able to play on your Nextbox without connection. Now, let me dive deeper into that part right there. No apps, no games, no nothing can be launched from the Nextbox without an internet connection, rendering the console absolutely useless with internet. Now what else will always-on connection do? It will greatly DECREASE the longevity of the console, which IMO, is probably my biggest concern. Now how will it decrease it's longevity you might ask? Well let me put this way. 3 years ago this month, Xbox LIVE for the Original Xbox was shut down. You can still play Original Xbox games on there no problem, but you can't play any multiplayer. Eventually the same thing will happen with the Xbox 360. When this happens to the Nextbox, no matter how long the line that will be, your console will be 100% useless and worth absolutely nothing. Why? Well, since you needed internet to connect to Xbox LIVE so you can play your games, launch apps, etc., well...without Xbox LIVE support, you can't do any of that. So when the Nextbox "dies", it really is dead, unlike previous console. Congrats! You now have have an over-priced paper-weight, which bring me to my next point.

2) $500 starting price point. The Xbox 360, for example, had a launch price of $400 (or somewhere around there) and the PS2, for example, had a launch price of $300, the PS3, for example had a launch price of $600. Both the Xbox 360 and the PS2 had very successful launches and were/are awesome consoles. The PS3 IS in fact an awesome console as well, but it did not have quite the nice launch as its predecessor. Few people bought the PS3 because it was so expensive at launch, and yes the Nextbox is $100 LESS than the PS3 launch price, but still, that's $500, and I suspect the same thing that happened with the PS3 will happen again, but only this time with the Nextbox.

3) Not backwards compatible. I fail to see why they can't add this in. And for the people saying "Oh, it's because the Nextbox will run an x86 based CPU whereas the Xbox 360 ran an ARM-based CPU" your argument is invalid. The Original Xbox had an x86 CPU (in fact it was a toned-down Pentium 4 used in the Original Xbox), and when the Xbox 360 came around, it could run Original Xbox games just fine. So why aren't we getting backwards compatibility now? This part also applies to the PS4.

4) Xbox LIVE subscription to make a return. Ya...no....no thanks.
So if you read all of that, thank you for reading my OPINIONS. What are your opinions and thoughts on the Nextbox?

The always online rumour bothers me, but I think the point about it 'dying' at some point in the future is bullshit. Leaving aside the fact that switching off Live for the original Xbox is a much smaller deal than doing so for the nextbox (or even the 360) would be, I seriously doubt that they wouldn't provide a way to access your content after the switch-off. And, yeah, I'm not going to pay some 800-1000 AUD for a console unless it has a lot of damn good exclusives.

  • Can we stop spewing this Always-On bullshit. YOUR COMPUTER IS ALWAYS CONNECTED TO THE INTERNET EVEN WHEN IT'S TURNED OFF. Always On does not necessarily mean one has to be connected to Internet to play.

  • I can't fully comprehend people. Nothing is confirmed right now, ESPECIALLY the always-on. The very first rumor that came up about the "always on" thing said that it will basically always be connected to the internet if possible, not that you HAVE to have it. Someone just twisted the authors words. Second, backwards compatibility is much more complicated than most think. As some on else said, the original xbox and the 360 had the same software emulation. We know almost nothing about the hardware of the nextbox, so this is up in the air. I'm just hoping they do have blueray in it.

  • The reason that the 360 was backwards compatible with some original xbox games was because they used software emulation, which can often be buggy and a huge hassle to get working correctly. In order for true backwards compatibility, you would need the actual 360 hardware to be inside the new xbox, which would be very costly. It makes sense that the new xbox will not be natively backwards compatible, but they may offer some form of emulation, similar to what the PS4 is doing to counter it's lack of native backwards support. As for the always online thing. This rumor has been floating around for a long time now, and has been out there for both the next-gen systems. There has been an overwhelmingly negative reaction to these rumors, and Microsoft would be stupid not to listen to that reaction. If they had originally planned the new xbox to require an internet connection, I doubt they have left those plans in. It will probably be a device that will actively use the internet when it is hooked into it, but will not be crippled if the internet disappears. The new xbox and the PS4 will likely be nearly identically priced, since the companies are so competitive with each other. They will gladly take a decent loss selling the hardware if it means getting the lead over their competitor in the games market.

    • God damn, I can't wait for the reveal. Soooo hoping that always-on is false. Miscrosoft honestly can't be so stupid that they'd make their next big thing a $300-500 paperweight without internet. They should definitely know, being a business and all, that implementing this would guarantee loss of customers.

      • If these rumors end up being true the Xbox will be slaughtered by the PS4 and this will be a enormous failure for the company. $10/month for Xbox live really? Basically an Ipad has everything live has in terms of apps so basically its just $120 to play online. Ill wait and see but XBL has to be spectacular for me to consider paying double what I pay now. Always online too man if they do this Im thinking the Xbox will be done to be honest its just crazy. Will have to wait and see but Im heavily leaning toward the PS4 right now

      • I still refuse to buy into the rumors. The idea that the console will not have offline functionality is just absurd.

So are these all based on rumors? Because I'm pretty sure it's all based on rumors. Let's say this console releases at the end of 2013. That means the Xbox 360 had a life of 8 years. That's a long ass time. Plus if it stays online for only 5 years after the nextbox comes out (the same length the original xbox had, 5 years after the 360 came out) then it will have a life of 13 years. Now that really is a long ass time. I bet the nextbox will have a life of AT LEAST 10 years. Plus 5 years after the next generation after that it's 15 years. At 500 bucks, that makes it 33 dollars per year for a console. That's a good price and I don't care if it becomes a paperweight after it dies.

        • Pros: 1) Meh 2) Meh 3) I already have a functioning OS 4) With a price over $500? Cons: 1) Yep 2) Yep 3) The hell?! 4) I might not be able to play H5 but I'll still be play the others on the Xbox 360 Bravo M$, you've just lost a customer. Assuming the rumors are true.

          • Pretty sure most of the rumours contradict each other at this point. But if the Nextbox is always-online, $500 and not backward compatible, then that's a big turn-off. Even more so if we have to pay for XBL.

          • Until MS says otherwise, I'm regarding this stuff as what it is; rumors. However, with Bungie being multiplatform I'm not absolutely set on getting the nextbox. Depending on which console appeals to me more, I might make a switch and some of these are things that I will be taking into consideration. I don't think requiring an internet connection would bug me too much, but I have had my isp go out before, and it's a stark reminder of how much I rely on the internet. Backwards compatibility isn't an issue for me and I'll probably be waiting for a price drop regardless of which system I decide on. Again though, I'm going to jump to any conclusions until I've heard it from the horse's mouth.

          • I think I'm done with console gaming to be honest, unless the new xbox has good exclusives... Halo and Gears are both dead to me at this point, so I don't really care about xbox too much anymore. Hopefully the 360 will still be supported for a while with Live and stuff, or I'm out.

Backwards Compatibility is STUPID&Pointless.. Unless your 360 breaks of course and you still want to play your old games.

OP, I can tell you didn't play the 360 at launch.... Because I did and it was far from a successful launch. Cons: 2 console versions available: $400 +tax version (no hard drive and wired controller) $500 + tax version (comes with hard drive and wireless controller) No good games were available. CoD2 was the only one worth the $60 price tag. Xbox Live was nothing like it is now. No party chat, no arcade games, no apps, no reply value. I used my 360 to play Halo 2 on. I'm just saying Microsoft has a bad history when it comes to launching a new console.

Xbox 360 ran SOME original Xbox games using a software emulator specifically written for the most popular Xbox games, such as Halo and the first couple of Call of Duty games. It did not run ALL original Xbox games. I can't opine any further on this, but just wanted to point this out.
