edit- If you read none of this thread, at least click the link below. http://www.thetruthaboutguns.com/2013/01/foghorn/new-from-trijicon-ccas-auto-adjusting-riflescope/ Should the rifles on the low end of the projectile/acceleration technology spectrum be affected by bullet drop? Please explain your position if you want to or if it is not covered by a simple yes or no. It's in Battlefield, should it be in Destiny? Should Kentucky Windage be involved somehow as well? Should there be an visual automation system in higher-tech ballistic weapons that accounts for all of the following and provides accurate fire?

  • Other. It'd add a small layer of skill to the game. "Laser guns" would have to consume an extremely large amount of energy to be effective, at most, it'd be made into a sniper where every bullet is basically just a super battery. I would enjoy a good amount of Kentucky Windage (say you get knocked by a Cabal, your scope should logically be moved/misaligned). Also, not every planet has the same gravity, thus bullets become heavier and drop faster. Your scope wouldn't be "zeroed in" at all times. If you've shot a real sniper, or play airsoft; you'd understand this (or if you just research). It'd make the profession more...skillful. =Digression= Common thing people tend to overlook with "plasma weapons", they're absolutely gigantic. Also, they are extremely ineffective inside an atmosphere unless you're within about 2 feet from the target. Now if you want a long range one, you'll be more thinking of an electrolaser or a particle beam. Electrolasers would be rendered useless against anything which is insulated against energy, and magnetic fields (shields). Particle beams also require a large energy source (larger than a battlefield powerplant), thus it is highly unusable except on large ships, for example. "What if we learned how to condense energy into very small packages?" you may ask. Highly unlikely given that if we are pushed to the very edge of our existence, we probably weren't able to figure it out. Let's say we did somehow figure out how to make handheld energy weapons. How would it cool down? You just fired something that vaporizes Steel (3000 C, 5400 f) and Tungsten (5550 C, 10000 F), your weapon would melt in your hand. On a balance issue, laser/energy weapons would be overpowered. Since they are energy weapons, they'd be untraceable by light, untraceable by sound, and have no recoil. =Digression End= Should be implemented, but to make it easier for some people, should be able to dial in your scopes and have a "rangefinder". So it shows how many metres away they are and you scroll your mouse wheel, for example, to get as close as you can to that range.

    • I would say no. I like the theory but it could make shooting feel more laborious. It probably hasn't been done in many games for that particular reason.

      • Lasers don't have bullet drop. Keep that in mind. But other than that I'd put bullet drop in Snipers and assault weapons that fire actual bullets.

            • Of course it all depends on type of weapon, projectile, map size but I do think it would make things more interesting at long ranges.

              • Not a simple yes or no. If a weapon's projective is entirely based upon energy, it would make sense that the rounds would not be affected by gravity. However for any projectile that has weight, then yes it should be affected by bullet drop. It'd probably be best if snipers don't have too much bullet drop. But food for thought, sometimes calculating bullet drop into extremely long range snipes is very fun.

In the future they figured out how to make guns that compensate for complicating factors like the laws of physics so it's all good.

                  • I'm going to say no. Bullet-drop is a cool concept, but unless we're going to be including concepts like wind-speed, air pressure, humidity and temperature, there is no reason to add this single "realistic" feature. If we are going to make this like real-world sniping, I doubt anyone is going to be a sniper. It's just way too much math. I would like to see some travel-time compensation though.

                          • Plenty of COD fans here I see. Yes of course you should have bullet drop on all guns if you would like to retain any sort of realism. Bullets are effected by gravity I'm afraid. With higher technology should come longer ranges before bullet drop takes effect. That is presuming all gun in the game use projectiles :o

                                • Who would want something that really only has a place in simulators and arcade shooters with simulator elements to be in a high-fantasy/sci-fi game? The bullets are probably either made of energy or move at much higher speeds than modern rounds, so bullet drop would not have much of an effect on them. I honestly fail to understand why anyone would want this, Destiny is clearly not going for realism.

                                  • Of course, I also want it to be affected by wind-speed and direction, thermodynamics, curvature of the plane, local gravitational phenomena, magnetism, photon emissions, micro imperfections in the slugs and of course quantum physics. No, what the -blam!- for?

I love the idea of bullet drop. I play BF3 so I'm quite familiar with it. Bullet drop makes sniping skill. Makes shooting a lot different than COD. Bullet drop is real and should be incorporated into Destiny :). I love the challenge!! And mastering bullet drop with sniping makes being a sniper more respected because of the skill it requires. And they should add bullet speed too. Like how in BF3 you have to lead on your target...now that is even more challenging and what is life or games with out challenge? Boredom that's what. So I say add bullet drop and take into account the speed of the projectiles as well. BF3 is a great success and that's how they did things. Bullet drop and bullet speed. Yes it's not popular like COD but this is Bungie we're talking about. It'll be popular regardless x). I forgot to add this part....since this is a Sci-Fi shooter the guns will either be energy weapons or projectile weapons or both. If they're projectile weapons then bullet drop should still be a factor. Yes it's in the 2700's but you have to remember, gravity hasn't gone away. Sure the projectile may go further with out dropping do to advances in technology and what not, but it's still a solid mass. And unless physics have changed the projectile will drop after a certain distance. As for a rail gun...well if we got those than there wont be much drop do to the speed and energy behind it. That's my understanding of a rail gun anyway. Would love to see Bungie put work into bullet drop and projectile speed. If not, oh well. Gonna be a great game either way :D

                                      • See my posts on arguments to realism. Bullet drop is included in Battlefield as a balancing mechanic against snipe camping. Bungie's type of shooter has no need for it. It's always been more arcade-esque.

                                        • One of the fun things with bullet drop is mastering it, getting a feel for how much it'll drop for each notch on the sniper scope. However in Destiny where you travel around the solar system to 7 different planets, each with a different amount of gravity, the learning curve would become way to steep and it wouldn't be fun anymore.

                                        • Bullet drop should be included because of the increased skill curve but the drop should not be too drastic or if the weapon is beam, laser or plasma based.
