Microsoft was the one who was thinking about watermarking their games. From the begging Sony said the PS4 would play used games.

  • Ummm... no. Sony has already stated that their PS4 will not be backwards compatible, and Sony was the company leading the charge on "watermarking" the games. Sony is in quite the pinch financially (corporation-wide and under going a supposed massive restructuring), and they were the ones screaming the loudest about allegedly losing tons of cash to the used games industry. They were also the ones who first designed a prototype system for watermarking the games, IIRC.

  • You are quite correct sir but fanboys will point fingers at each other and say "They started it" and the truth will get buried.

  • Agreed. As it was Sony who initially started filing for patents for such technology earlier last year they were the ones I would call the instigators. However, that being said, Sony did recently just come out and state that the PS4 will be capable of playing used games and that they dropped that idea awhile back. That being said, it is also entirely a rumor in of itself that Microsoft also wont allow used games to be played. That would not only cripple stores like Gamestop (who then in turn wouldnt promote their console) but it would cripple Microsoft too. Their patents are more along the lines of trying to find some way of ensuring each disc only gets used by own owner PER PURCHASE. Frankly I dont know how they would do something like that as Im not a developer or really have any personal background in that field, but if they couldnt figure out how to do that they will more than likely drop the subject matter too, just like Sony

That's what I meant. It's my fault for not researching enough, because I wasn't aware that Sony "started it". All I knew was that as of now the PS4 will play used games.
"ensuring each disc only gets used by own owner PER PURCHASE"
Simple - online passes. I know, "rabble rabble, online passes are evil!" But that's the future. Content that can be linked to one, repurchasable key, at a fraction of the cost of the actual game. Game stop still gets used sales, developers/publishers still get money on each sale.

  • I never really got why everyone hated online passes, but I guess it's because I buy most of my games new. One thing I do hope for is that the online passes are not profile locked but system locked. I'm the only one in my house who plays video games but it would really suck for brothers and sisters who like the same games.

  • The reason some people buy used games, is because they cant really afford them brand new. Having online passes hinders these people from playing them right away, because they then have to save up more money to buy that too.

  • The problem is these developers and producers get greedy. A used game can literally be bought and sold multiple times per disc. These companies want to get some form of profit from said transactions. So yes online passes are a great way to do that (as in buy the disc that comes with one initial online pass, and then anyone who buys the used game has to also buy their own pass) but what these companies are trying to do is find a way to get more money from the actual purchase of the disc. As this is crazy-talk, I would much rather see the implementation of those passes. Makes sense to me
