There are plenty of more meaningful ways to express the gravity of a situation without using language. There are plenty of games that do it. Just because COD swears to be edgy doesn't mean that Bungie has to. They are true storytellers who don't need to rely on little cultural quips to get their point across. They put in plenty of violence without making it grotesque like some other games. If that means that more people can play it, then all the better.
