Destiny NEEDS an "M" rating

I know that often times, developers and gamers alike don't really care what the rating on a game is, but from what I've heard (all speculation of course), is that Bungie is aiming for a "T" rating for Destiny. If this is the case, which I hope it isn't, it will be a huge mistake. The story for what Destiny is claiming to be, cannot be done justice if Bungie doesn't allow for the grit, violence, language, etc that would come with that setting, it can't be believable. If the world is almost completely wiped out, and the human race is having to fight several other species in a last ditch effort to survive, you better bet that there will be "F bombs" dropped, there will be people being shot (meaning decent amounts of blood), etc. Bungie, please, don't let yourselves be held back by a rating in order to get more sales. Make this game an "M" rated game. Anything less would be simply uncompelling and unbelievable, and would really detract from the story and mood that would be present should this situation in this game ever really happen.

It is a shame when developers shoot for a certain rating. Take artistic liberties with whatever you are creating and make what you want, and then take the rating you get. This is something Bungie has always done, so I am surprised to hear they would shoot for a certain rating. I understand that it gives more potential for sales, but the only people developers should really try and please are themselves. Once they are happy with the game, you release it and see if others share your opinion. Edit: Holy mother of necrobump this thread is old!

    • If you think swearing and gore makes something mature then you are not mature.

      • There are plenty of T-rated games that have had a very mature story, like the Batman: Arkham games.

      • Can we stop this un-educationtinal, non-interesting, and totally irrelevant discussion? I think that some future curses would be cool (Star Wars for example) but cursing is simply a method of expressing emotion by those socially awkward and mentally impared.

        • Yes because in a Post-apocalyptic world, the F-bomb would still be remembered. Also after a few hundred years.

          • Strong language should indeed be implemented to sort of let the seriousness of the situation sink in at times.

Edit: Ach! Necrobump! Sorry guys. Bungie has never done "f bombs" in any of their games. I don't think they're necessary. I'd prefer a Firefly-esque system of swearing. As far as violence goes, so far we've got very little blood and lots of guns that incinerate. That being said, I still think it'll be rated M for marketing reasons. Just like the Halo games were. (Yes, I know the ESRB isn't connected at all to the companies... in theory.)

The fact that you think these videogames need an M rating is proof you bought into the nonsense. Nobody cares about people "dropping F bombs." It is fantasy, and it is supposed to be fantasy. Stop trying to make it reality. Go to Call of Duty for that stuff.

            • It should be rated B. For Bungie. But seriously, Destiny doesn't need to be dark and edgy, and that certainly isn't what I'm expecting. It's fantasy; it's been likened to Star Wars. It should be bright and just plain awesome. Humanity may have been forced to their knees, but they're still in the fight. They still have one last stronghold left. They're still clinging on in a distant future where the whole galaxy is against them. They still have hope. Also, if it's bright, the dark bits will be so much darker by contrast.

But any one can make a game with a lot of blood and a lot of language and you see a lot of it. But if you have bungie that can make a game so good and amazing and have a good story and good combat and it's T that is that amazing company. it doesn't need a m rating

              • why? no conversation has ever been improved by the addition on the "F-bomb" as you refer to it. words are very temporary things, the basics will survive, the structure of the language will stay, but profanity and sayings will change over time. for instance: you are a filthy concubine. grody to the max! ugh, gag me with a spoon it's the bees knees the cats pajamas Thy vile canker-blossom'd countenance curdles milk and sours beer. you see? not one of them sounded to up to date. why on earth would 800 years in the future would the be using the same curses we do now? we can't even keep our sayings from decade to decade, or for that matter month to month. YOLO sorry just making a point. but blood, yes lots of blood, MOAR BLOOD FOR THE BLOOD GOD! now if you'll excuse me I need to wash out my mouth with soap.

              • From what I've seen my personal opinion about Destiny's story isn't suppose to be a gritty realistic post-apocalypse setting. The story and setting are suppose to be inspiring and hopeful. We were almost wiped out and the traveler saved us. Now that we've regained our strength we're going back out to explore the universe and see what mystery and wonder awaits us. This isn't halo. It's not a galactic war with soldiers and drama and death and destruction. We are Guardians of Earth going back out to explore the rich and mysterious universe :)

                • Just look at halo. Halo tech was rated M for blood and violence... That's it no language not "intense violence" or "blood and gore" now a days it literally takes 1 drop of blood and one death in game to make it M, so don't worry about it being rated T.

The entire Lord of the Rings series, books and movies, would like to have a word with you. That is one of the greatest epics written, has darkness, violence, and death, but not one ounce of profanity nor explicit violence simply because "it's gritty." I could read LOTR to my future children and the worst I would be worried about is scaring them with a part featuring a giant spider. If anything, the LOTR's story feel seems to be what Bungie is shooting for: A world with hope. To say that the ridiculous overuse of profanity is a necessity? Oh, come now, surely we haven't fallen this deep into societal degradation. Battlefield 3 was ruined because every single multiplayer character cursed like a fourth-grader who just learned what curse words are, and it didn't make the game more "realistic" or "gritty" in a war game. Destiny will be what it will be, and to demand that it must strive for an "M" rating simply to cater to your tastes discredits Bungie's work.

                    • The future most likely will hold tons of colorful language, but by the sheer amount I use the word -blam!- it will have little to no meaning in the future.

                    • I say keep it about Halo style violence and language (possibly more violent) then it will be fine. But I do agree that it needs an M rating.

                    • Halo had no f bombs. Halo barely had anything "inappropriate" in it. And yet it was still M. I hope destiny is the same. I feel like the M rating scares off a few of the annoying kids, even if the game isn't that bad
