In ME 1, they needed the conduit to get to the Citadel so they could surprise the council,
The collectors are far more advanced than any other race, and they have husks and indoctrination to help them, not to mention seeker swarms.
In ME 3, the reapers target the home worlds first because their plan to take out the citadel was foiled in the first game.

What would the Collectors use to attack Earth They would need more than just that one cruiser to bypass the Alliance fleets

They have more than one cruiser. In Paragon Lost Collectors operated out of a completely different cruiser. They probably had several in all stationed at the Collector base. As far as taking out Earth... maybe. Earth's fleets didn't have Collector ship technology at the time and their ground forces didn't have countermeasures against seeker swarms so a focused attack on Earth may have been able to overrun it. It is definitely iffy though. There ought to have been a more clear reason why Earth was a vulnerable target.

I'm sure the seeker swarms could take Earth easily but it is hard to believe them defeating the space fleet in the way first Maybe they planned to use the geth for that after the heretic virus infected them all
