My mixed feelings for Halo (343i)...

"Were it so easy", my initial thoughts for the idea of Halo 4. I remember the previous years, where it was just mere speculation and terribly false rumors that there would indeed be a Halo 4. When it was officially revealed at E3 2011, I wasn't as excited as I thought it would be. I did feel something though, up until now I couldn't figure out what it was: Doubt. Similar in comparison to Tony Stark's thoughts post-invasion from the Avengers, "Nothing's been the same since New York. You experience things, and then they're over." For me, the original Halo Trilogy was that experience. Each game told a different tale and immersed you in various ways. The ending of Halo 3 was great for me, it left you to create your own ending in your mind. I guess the question I really asked when Halo 4 was announced was "Do we really need this?" Honestly, after playing Halo 4, I can say that I feel like it should have ended at 3. Everything afterwards was just Microsoft trying to squeeze out every drop of money they could from the franchise. Now don't get me wrong, I love Halo; But like all good things it should have came to an end. Halo left its mark in history as a defining trilogy from the previous decade, but now it's basking in its former glory. Like the gaming industry today, the main focus is only money. With DLC Passes, unreasonably priced content, annual franchise installments, terrible publishers, and etc. Although it is 343i's first game, they have a direct relation to Microsoft. I mean surely that shouldn't allow much room for mistakes should it? Not only that, but 343i seems to be listening to the wrong portion of the fanbase, if they're even listening at all. I could keep going on about my glory days on Halo compared to now, but that's for another time. What are your thoughts?

Started a new topic: What Halo 4 Could Have Been...(20 Replies))

    • I don't have mixed feelings. Bungie made amazing Halo games, 343i have made a single disappointing one. All I know is that there was not a single reason why Halo 4 couldn't be as good or better than older Halo games. Building on the work and efforts of previous Halos..... how can you make it so much worse?

        • Halo 3 didn't finish the story, resolved hardly any plot points if any at all, and actually brought up more questions than it started with. From that point of view, Halo 4 was artistically necessary. On the other hand, Halo's a flagship franchise. They're not supposed to die.

          • I remember how many arguments I've caused between E3 2012 and Halo 4's release, then it actually came out and everyone hates it.

          • I see Halo games now as a sort of -blam!-. Halo 4 is one of the worst insults I've ever suffered through.

Halo 4 had so much potential it was ridiculous. 343 realized it, but the Demonspawn known as Microsoft wanted it to cater to the casual gamer. *cough* Call of Duty fans. *cough cough* That meant eliminating almost all competitive aspects, eliminating any learning curve similiar to past games, and dumbing it down for the CoD players to understand. *cough* 12 year olds. *cough* Man, I better go get a glass of water! Anyway, the way 343 is tryimg to get there little waypoint 1-50 system rolling, whatever its called, I can tell they want to fix there mistakes, but unless H5 is fantastic, I'll lose all interest in Halo, period. They know exactly what people want. There are no excuses.

              • Couldn't agree more. To me Halo 4 is a decent game, but it doesn't feel like the others and having played since Halo 1 it's a big change.

              • I don't see any behind-the-scenes differences between Halo 4 and previous Halo games-- except that publishers are now better at doing what they've always done. "Unreasonable pricing" is what happens when people want even better (costlier) games for the same price. My only problem is that I don't really like the game, lol. As always, my belief is that the "good ol days" were when you were too young to realize they weren't that good.

              • I'm glad it didn't end because I would have never got to play Reach and ODST which I love both of those games. I don't play Halo 4 since I don't like it at all and I will wait until next game. Maybe 343 will make an actual good campaign and good music.

              • Did we need Halo 2, or Halo 3? No. To say you no longer derive enjoyment from the series is one thing, but to say it should have ended, is another. There's still people who enjoy Halo in its latest incarnation, and yet more who want to see new adventures within that universe. Let them have their fun, free of your inane criticism.

                • Campaign was decent. Story was a little wonky since I haven't read a few of the more recent books. Gameplay was fun, but I kind of ruined my experience for the story by playing on legendary solo first run through. Got kind of cumbersome and boring especially on the last few levels. Visuals were nice, music...well...I miss Marty and my Gregorian chanting tbh. Spartan Ops is alright. It gets repetitive after a while though. Mostly seems to be a cleverly disguised "Kill the bad guys and then press this button" style of gameplay. Nothing wrong with that though. Don't get me wrong the story is interesting but well...yeah. Multiplayer I've found to be hilariously easy compared to previous titles when I played it. There seem to be only two extremes to the people who play it (from the people I've played anyway), you're either very good, or you're very bad. Not much middle ground to speak of. That was just IS though. I haven't delved into any of the objective stuff yet. Overall, I didn't think Halo 4 was bad, but it wasn't great either. But then again thats the problem. Previous installments have always been better than great. They always had me coming back to play. Halo 4 not so much.

                • I like it. I like the story, the new enemies, the new weapons, the art, a lot of the music, the gameplay and the multiplayer.

                  • I really couldn't agree more. Master Chief's story should have ended with Halo 3. Had 343 chosen a new protagonist to star in Halo 4, I think I would have enjoyed it a lot more. Master Chief was not their creation, so they had no right in continuing his story. They should have introduced a new Spartan that players could relate with. Instead, they're messing with the glorious canon that Bungie so painstakingly created.

I hear similar pessimism concerning Disney's reboot of Star Wars. Do we need it? No, of course not. But "Do we need it?" is a very subject question. To me, Halo 4 was a massive disappointment, from unrealistic character dialogue to linear storytelling. But that doesn't mean Halo 4 wasn't good or, even if it weren't good, that it shouldn't have ever been made. Fictitious universes like Halo are cherished to varying degrees by millions. Those millions of people can possibly be categorized into different groups; those who liked Combat Evolved yet hated everything that came after it; those who thought the series got better over time; and so on. Most of those people, however, wanted to see the next step; they wanted to know what was going to happen to Chief, they wanted to learn more about the Forerunner, they wanted to know what would come from the ragtag that was left of the Covenant. There's nothing wrong with handing the reigns over to someone else to finish telling that story or even creating more stories after a future ending. I do agree, though, that some things are experienced and that those experiences at some point end. If they didn't end, I don't think they'd leave as strong of an impression; such is the bitter-sweet nature of everything.

Halo 4 was Microsoft through and through. Nothing too risky like breaking into new territory and leading but instead everything based on a balance to appease everyone while pleasing no one save those who actually like the game. Competitive Hardliners wanted a harkening to Halo 3 and core game play, people like me want Scarab and awesome vehicular battles featuring the gambit from Air to Mechs, coupled gimmicks and tech. Microsoft wanted to break into other distributor's game models to access XBL user populations to sell avatar items and map packs. In the end it failed to meet any lasting expectations save the initial November Launch sales. Now it's just sad to watch Halo 4 get torn apart when underneath all the copying was a possibly great Halo game. I believe Halo 5 and 6 will have many items fixed but by then they'll be facing Destiny and a host of other new and still successful Ips willing to take chances over what I feel will be Microsoft's tentative hesitations to lose market shares in toys and clothing by doing nothing to shake the fry cooks (343) from doing anything else but flipping a tired digital burger. But hey maybe I'll be wrong and I hope so and that means Players win with all the choices presented with the next generation consoles.
