Please don't FORCE online.

I keep hearing Destiny is an Online Game. Fine. Yet please for the love of that's good can Bungie please not FORCE online connection "What do you mean Dude?" If your online goes off. If your connection is bad. You should STILL be able to play this game. You should not HAVE to be on a connection of any sort to play this. "But Dude. Everyone has online. Tis the future" I'de agree if online was 100 free and easy. But it isn't. 100% of players don't all have online. And forcing Online doesn't add anything to the game. It subtracts and alienates people. Worse off it makes players feel forced and unfree. "But it's the future. SIngle Player is boring. Online ALL DA WAY" Nope.

  • Sorry bro. New Age. Get interwebs. I personally have some reversations about the 'always online' way video games are going, but in Desinty it makes sense. It's an integrated world, built from the ground up to provide a interesting, interactive (with real people) experience. Thus, it fully makes sense for internet to be a requirement. I'm sorry if you live in a rural area with crappy interwebs, I actually know you're pain. But given how available online service is now, I don't see how you can afford to buy games and not afford at least a basic internet package.

  • I distinctly remember Bungie saying that Internet will be a requirement. It's an MMO, to be expected.

    • It's a changing environment, how else would they do that without an internet connection?

    • I don't think it should matter if some people have bad connection or none at all. I have had a steady high speed internet connection for the past seven years, I don't need someone who can't afford something ruining the potential of a game.

      • They probably can't fit the whole environment onto the disc. The scope of destiny's setting is enormous. You probably have to play online because the maps, the entire playspace, is online, not on the disc.

      • Most of the game is going to be loaded and streamed from the servers due to its massive size.

      • It's already decided. If you don't have a good connection, don't buy the game. Complaining about the always connected requirement is like complaining that you can't play WoW offline. It's not meant to be played offline, if you don't like it, don't buy it.

      • Destiny seems more focused towards creating a fun multiplayer experience with your friends as opposed to flinging you into a world of random people. By the way the game has been talked about, it sounds like it only drags people in on occasion and not too constantly. But we've yet to see. Overall though, it just does seem like a game meant for friends. Someone coined the term "Minimum Multiplayer Online" as opposed to Massively.

        • You're still thinking of this game as a basic FPS. Well..it's not. It's an MMOFPS. Stuff's gonna get MMO-y.

From what we've been told, it's been built from the ground up for that purpose. Players are intended to fight together. Even if you lone wolf it, players are still intended to make changes in the world that will influence other players, and even the loners will be affected by that. It's a major aspect of the game. The core of Destiny won't be as good without other people. In something like Diablo or Sim City, I can see why people don't like always-online connections. Those games can function fully as a single-player experience. Destiny cannot. You must be connected to get a full experience, therefore the connection is required.

I like how you made the other side of the argument seem incredibly unintelligent to make your point better, but in the process made yourself look worse because of your apparent misunderstanding of the point of view of the other side. This world we're playing in is a connected world -- a constantly connected world. One would assume that at any given time something one person or a group of people does/do could affect everyone else in some way. Because of this interconnection to everyone else playing the game, as well as the interdependence created as a result of this interconnection, you can't function in the world because your world is no longer accurate. The way I've had it described to me is that yeah, you COULD play World of Warcraft solo and with no one else there, but it'd be boring as hell and hardly anyone would utilize it.

              • I have to agree, that I would like an offline component of some sort, but I think at least maybe 70% of the game will be online. They are trying to make a living world, and trying to have their living world without some sort of online support is like cutting someone off life support. Depending on how they set up this game, offline 'could' be possible, but I don't see the whole game being playable offline with the tidbits they've given us. We'll just have to wait and see.

              • I know its scary and I have my doubts too, but I trust bungie to lead us by the hand out of our caves to show us the glorious light of their creation. I'm sure they've talked about the problems we all are foreseeing right now, and we must trust in their ability to solve them. That being said, Bungie is making this game for the masses, and unfortunately that means some people will be disappointed by some elements, but it isn't fair for any of us to take out our grievances on Bungie. It isn't personal, they are going to deliver the best experience they can to as many people as possible and we will just have to live with our small amount of disappointment. For all we know at this point this discussion could all be for nothing and Bungie has already worked around these concerns. Be Brave.

                  • "But I want to play World of Warcraft offline too!" No. It's about the experience, and the technology required. They're using server technology (and possibly some sort of streaming service). You can't access those things if you're offline. And part of their game is that you encounter other players while you're playing. It's not meant as a solo-experience.

                    • I agree. As much as I like Online gaming, when it comes to open worlds, I prefer solo play or co-op with people OF MY CHOOSING. It makes for less grief and more fun.

                    • One of the biggest problems with the always online strategy is, that once the servers go down you can't play the game anymore. So no more reliving your favorite level, no more nostalgia, etc.. And when I buy a game I would like to play the game every once in a while, even after some years. Imagine that you couldn't play Halo without being online, that would mean that you couldn't play the H:CE and H2 campaigns, you couldn't play slayer with your little brother. You couldn't show your PS friends what they have been missing for all those years. Also they say the world will be changing as ypu play online. Firstly why should that mean that you can't make an offline character, because even if the world will change, most changes will go unnoticed because you can't be everywhere at once. Secondly we really have to wait and see if those changes will make the always online worth it, because game developers have promised us a lot of things in the past but didn't always deliver.

                    • It's a persistent world. The world is changing, there are probably servers involved. It was built from the ground up for online cooperative gameplay. I am guessing that similar to an MMO, in order to play it without the internet, you would have to have your own server. I am am doubtful that Bungie will include that type of machinery with the game.

Sorry, man. It's the nature of this beast. I realize that people don't enjoy hearing "well.. looks like you're shit outta luck", but in this case, it looks like you are. I'm sure there will be plenty of excellent games that don't require a connection. You may want to look into one of them.

I've been feeling similarly, what with d3 among so many other titles requiring constant internet connections. It's happening with software too. Razer's configuration software has been moved to the cloud and you essentially have to login to a service to use your device in its full functionality. I trust Bungie though. The always online trend started as an anti-piracy thing, but I think Bungie is utilizing it to define a genre in this case. I.e. the game can't exist in any functionality without being constantly online. edit: also your third person references to yourself quotes are quite funny
