Proud to call yourself an atheist? Sign in

I am proud to be an atheist. For me, science is adequate to answer life's questions. I am confident that the mysteries that haven't been solved scientifically will be. I think that humanity is capable of anything, and it will only be a matter of time until we achieve the status we reserved solely for gods. Fellow atheists, please check in. Just state that you are an atheist, and why. If theists come in, be respectful. Lets see if we can have a conversation without it turning into a pissing match.

  • I am no longer ashamed to say I don't believe in religion. Having grown up religious, there was a pretty extreme stigma attached to the word atheism. I have found that over the last decade, that atheism is becoming much more acceptable. However, I don't take pride in being associated with the larger group. At least religions are uniform in belief, where atheists are not. I can share in a lack of belief as others, but completely disagree with the reasons why they have come to that conclusion. There is also a difference between those that proclaim no God can exist, and those that don't believe one does. I just don't like being lumped in with people who don't necessarily share my point of view.

  • Atheists only? Personally I'm agnostic leaning towards atheist. I doubt that there is a higher power but I'm open to the possibility. And -blam!-, if God/Odin/Zeus does exist, bitch has some explaining to do.

    • I am not a theist because, well there are too many reasons. Supernatural events don't happen often, if at all. The only ones recorded are about ghosts and of course, Jesus' resurrection. I'm sure there are other supernatural events in other books like the Quran. But unless I see it with my own eyes, I cannot believe. My dad commonly argues that, if I don't believe what the bible tells me, then I shouldn't believe in history, because that has been recorded too. And frankly, I'm sure there is a lot of history that has been inaccurately written down.

        • I personally don't believe in a god, but I wouldn't really be surprised if one (or many) turned out to exist, and I certainly wouldn't care anyway (Unless they are hostile, but we'd probably be doomed anyway). I also have no problems with theists, as they may just believe in a god (or many). I do have issues though with the beliefs and ideas that come with Religions though, particularly the vocal minority of both Theists and Atheists how feel that they have nothing better to do then force their beliefs upon others. That's bad.

I'm just going to say one thing that disproves what you just said. The universe did not just come into being. Science says that something can not come from nothing. That means that there had to have been something to start off with. I believe that that is God.

I'm proud to be someone who doesn't go around throwing my beliefs in other peoples faces. My viewpoint is irrelevant.

                • I don't really see why you would be proud to be an atheist. You're proud that you don't believe in a supernatural being. Doesn't really look like something to be proud about.

                • As someone who thinks about religion very little - I reject the label atheist because defining me in terms of the things I don't believe would require a huge list of nouns.

                  • I'm an atheist, but saying I'm proud to be one is so dumb. It almost comes with a sense of insecurity. I'm atheist, and I don't really care or think about it too much, nor do I think anybody else cares.

                  • To the people saying it's idiotic to have pride: What's wrong with feeling a satisfied sense of attachment toward one's own or another's choices and actions, or toward a whole group of people? It's a product of praise, independent self-reflection, or a fulfilled feeling of belonging.

                  • I hope that you are respectful enough to allow your child to make his own decisions about what he believes when he grows up and not to shut out the other possibilities besides atheism to him. I hope you are confident enough in the solving powers of science that you allow your son to come to that conclusion on his own and not because you teach him to eschew all but science.

I am as concerned, proud or boastful of my spiritual beliefs (or lack thereof) as I am about my sexuality. To me, they are both something that is not for common, anonymous public consumption. If someone wants to explore that part of my life, we will do so cooperatively, intimately and in privacy. This idea of "I am proud to be left handed" or any other difference (which means nothing in the public sphere) is alien and confusing to me. I don't share that sort of thing about myself with strangers, I surely don't feel obligated to shout or rub any noses in it, and why others feel the need to crow and boast? Utterly beyond me. Being overbearing and boastful is not the same thing as pride. Being private and reserved is not the same thing as shame. Jesus! I know, the irony. But seriously. Waving your ass, your flag, your t-shirt, your whatever is (to me) more a sign of insecurity than of real, solid and self-assured pride.

                      • You see? Only a handful of the posts were atheists checking in. Instead I have facepalm pics, an accusation I let prostitutes raise my child, a ninja trivializing my belief (recon, had I stated I was a proud Jew, would you have given me such a long reply?) I called for respect TO the theistic community, and received nothing but the opposite in return. All this was, was a call to my fellow atheists to admit what they are with no shame. Theists can't even hear that someone is an atheist without seeing it as an attack.
