Environment Size

(my first post on this site, excited to be a part of the community) I wanted to see what everyone's estimates are for how large these areas are going to be. We know that pretty much the entire solar system is accessible but obviously it's not real size. How large will the Last City be? I'm assuming the areas on other planets will be separated into a certain number of regions. What kind of sizes are we talking about? I'm fairly certain this game will not be linear even within these regions. And on to the matter of space travel, if we can control our flights. What would travel times be, stuff like that? Just looking for what everyone is thinking of or expecting.

  • This may be slightly off topic but how exactly do this type of MMO games work? I've never played a MMO before and I don't understand how all the players can fit into the same virtual world. How do some areas not get over crowded?

    • If they can pull I off, I'd love it to be skyrim sized.

    • I'm not sure to be honest. I'm hoping big, but I don't know. It's hard to guage these things. I don't want to hope for something too big, because if I do I'm going to be let down (perhaps) when the game gets released. But I don't want to say it's small, because I don't underestimate Bungie. So, I'm going to go for Forgeworld type big for each area.

      • Welcome to the community, and I do not actually know but my best guess would be that the size of the Last City would probably be the biggest and be the most dense. Whereas other areas (like Mars) would probably individual bases scattered throughout the planet in which you travel in between using some sort of teleporting device but inter-planetary travel would probably be some high-speed aircraft of some sort.

      • My guess is that on the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions of the game the planets and such will be spilt up much more than they will on the next generation consoles. I think that with the greater processing powers that are coming on the next generation consoles we will be able to explore much larger landscapes at once. If you watch videos and the ViDoc on this game you can see very far away in some shots. I think that the largest the maps will get on the current consoles will be smaller than Skyrim (since it loads in the background) but not by that much. On the next generation consoles I think we will possible be able to explore gigantic sections of the planets and the main transitions will be from major locations such as planet-space or planet surface-city. As for the Last City, I think that we probably won't be able to explore the entire place. There will probably be the main section (that being the tower where you live and shop) and then different districts that you can travel to. Space travel is most likely going to be flyable and fightable. I imagine that we will be able to fly from planet to planet using some for of "Hyperspeed" or "Slip-space". Since it is 700+ years in the future and Humanity has gone through its "golden age" of space travel and exploration, I expect that we will be able to fast-travel major distances using FTL speeds. As for regular flight I am quite sure that we can fly around and fight in space since we get to customize our own spacecrafts and decide why kind of ship we want (most likely heavy gunship, medium frigate, and light scout ship).

        • Like others have; i'd like to give you a warm welcome to the community! Now to answer your question: I want to say the size of the Last City would be... Well the only comparison I have would be to as big as a city in Assassins Creed would be. It's a terrible example, but at least it made a bit sense (hopefully). As for space travel. A nifty idea would be that they allow us to roam freely above a planets orbit and maybe a bit further, and once we leave the area we'll be met with a loading screen. That's my speculation.

          • There's a lot of speculation with this because bungie has only given brief glimpses of gameplay and haven't commented on the size of anything. As for the lost city, here is some concept art. https://www.google.com/url?sa=i&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=images&cd=&cad=rja&docid=LefAAmR0eCHwsM&tbnid=4MKaTtsbzVxtyM:&ved=&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ign.com%2Farticles%2F2012%2F11%2F28%2Fdestiny-story-details-concept-art-leaked&ei=rdYmUfjROILg8ATS9oFo&psig=AFQjCNGrtNN_W24EEK9grzw8fY8p938m7A&ust=1361586222371929 It looks pretty big to me. Who knows how big the environments are. I'd be surprised if bungie is for sure on that since they are working with next gen consoles. I think it will depend on what the limits of the new consoles are.

Welcome to the community first off! IMO i think they may have specific locations you can fast travel too. The areas themselves may be pretty huge in the first place. Not enough info to go by yet :/
