I remember this happening in Terraria too of all games. I'd love to see something like this if only to stop everyone looking the same.
It does have a downside, however. You can't judge the stats of a player in combat based on their visual appearance. Whether or not this will be an issue it's too early to tell.

Why should you even do that? Engage him or her and do your best, if you get killed well then you are the lesser player imho. Only reason for people to be able to determine someones stats by looking at their gear, is when they want to gank. I hate ganking and I do hope that it is nearly impossible to deduce someones stats by looking at the gear. Only thing that should be around is by looking at the other players weapon should deter you to attack.
