Boobs in Destiny (Breast Thread Ever)
12/23/2014 Edit: This thread was made before Destiny was released. We didn't know how things were going to be yet!
There's a certain type of response that I'm expecting for this thread (immature and full of boob jokes), and then there's a certain kind of response I'm looking for (responsible conversation). I'm not telling either of you types of posters to leave. It's okay. I would like to talk about breasts. Specifically, armored breasts. I don't want Destiny to go down a dark path of poor anatomy. Allow me to say that the more unbalanced the ratio of female to male artists there are on a project, the higher the likelihood of us seeing game armor like this. It's annoying enough to have two melons on your chest, but when they're held up by gravity-defying pieces or metal, that's painful. Bras filled with cushioning and breathable material can still be painful. Imagine chicken wire holding up your moobs. But that's an over-the-top fantasy MMO, not a space opera. So let's pick a space opera. Why does the world of Mass Effect require lady lumps on armor? Why are those emphasized boob pieces necessary in a game that made some huge strides in female representation in games? Do sports bras not exist there? Can we top that off with the idea of a blunt object going towards someone's chest? Lady lump armor will make things slide into the -blam!-ing sternum. You know, the bone right in front of a shit ton of vital organs. So what's the solution for this problem? 1. Cut a hole in the box. 2. Make sure your artists/modelers are well versed in proper female anatomy. 3. Buy a sports bra. 4. Take the awesome male armor you had before and put a woman in it. Don't get me wrong! People come in all shapes and sizes. Breastplates will sometimes need to be a bit bigger for some people and some people will need slimmer sets of power armor. Sometimes people wear form-fitting armor, but that still doesn't excuse outlining the breasts on the armor. Wanting armor that caters to the female anatomy doesn't justify overcompensating for the female anatomy. Armored breasts do not need to be lifted and separated when one encapsulated piece suffices in the first place. Done. You think I'm kidding? I'm -blam!-ing serious.

    • I completely support you in your argument games that do over sexualisation piss me off guild wars 2 i have to avoid certain armours or transmute them so they look like armour you would wear into combat i want females to look like there in armour that would suit them for combat not sex objects because seriously if im in a combat zone against a hail of fire i want a female player to have my back because there better at games, i dont need a idiot to be gawking and getting shot because im planning on a field medic role, i hope they make it suitable people should be aloud there variation but at the end of the day i think we need to see that we cant basicly bully women in a video game. good luck.

    • First off, I understand what you are saying, and I do agree. However, I also feel that completely ignoring the fact that the female form is different is just as bad as overtly embellishing it. I think the happy medium falls in an area where you'd see Faith from Mirror's Edge or many of the female (and armored) characters of Gears of War. There is clear femininity, but not embellished or sexualized.

      • I think they will make it realistic to some pionts.Obviously not overally sexual.Like joan of arc's armor you can't tell by her body that she is a female.I think for the seperation of a characters sex it will be slightly less realistic so they can show the breast more visible and slightly change the body type so that you know the character is female.

      • I think the best thing they could do to solve this (and many other possible problems) would be to have a legitimate and in depth character creation portion at the beginning of the game. Females (or males who play as females) who don't want to look like they are fresh out of a hentai while playing their game shouldn't have to. Being able to design how your character looks in game should be inside a large title. ___________________________________________________________________________ "Our ascendance will not be prevented, only halted long enough for you to believe that you're safe."

      • If you hadn't noticed, Reach and 4 had Fem Spartans in them. I s'pose we can only count Reach since that was made by Bungie. I didn't happen to notice boobs at all, did you? Oh yeah, that's right, there was armour there that looked close to identical on males and females save for some size differences. So I don't think you need worry about that. Now, the Kats Ass situation, maybe a little more so.

      • Well thought out and executed post, Cortana V. It's interesting, too. It seems to me like only making one model for the armor in nearly any genre (predominantly futuristic settings) would only cut production times and make the game that much cheaper and easier. Plus, I'm sorry, but coding for boob/butt jiggle seems like a ludicrous waste of money.

        •
Yet female soldiers have long had to endure the challenges of wearing armor designed specifically for men. Women make up 14 percent of today’s Army and see combat more often than ever, yet women are still issued equipment designed for male soldiers.
According to the guys actually using armor, it cannot be made the same. I don't have any issues with it being less revealing, as I always comment to my wife about the ridiculousness of female armor (I'm looking at you TERA and Rift..) but it does need to be different because, frankly, you're (women) built different than I am. I didn't think that the female armor done in Halo Reach or in Halo 4 was not tasteful or protective. Kat's armor wasn't revealing and made more logical sense. The new Spartan armor on Commander Palmer, while not designed by Bungie, is still a good representation IMO that female armor is the same but different than male. So, in reality, I'm not sure what you're expecting the developers to be like. They've already shown that they only make non-combative characters like Cortana sex objects. What are you really worried about? I highly doubt a developer like this is going to put a serious heavy warrior female in a chainmail bikini.

        • You have presented a good reason and on good grounds for what your saying and its hard to argue with it. I have never thought of something like this before but they did have a "Sex Appeal" adjuster in Saints Row 3 and I think the same system should be added into Destiny just to make it feel more appropriate and not make anatomy of your character a carbon copy of all the rest. If you want to be a flat chested tom boy out there using your fists to utterly embarrass us guys,by knocking us flat on our faces I say go ahead. But if you want to be a umm.. "Well Endowed" hot mamacita using her looks to distract us and then knock us flat on our faces I still say go ahead. Its all about the imagination.

        • Well, in my opinion, there is a difference between putting what I would say "realistic" female armor in the game (Because, face it, females have bewbs, and some might find it offensive to act as though they don't) But there's a difference to making a female character and exploiting a female character And you can quote me on that

        • Body armor should protect a woman like it does a man more realistically in video games. If they're trying to differentiate female and male players, well, on the battlefield it doesn't matter and the only thing you're worried about is surviving. Even though this is a digital medium, it'd probably be easier for the female audience to become more immersed if they had the option (or make it a standard,) to be armored like they are in real life, from head to toe like any of us guys are. If they want to make some suits have fantasy style breast plates, make it so you don't have to wear them. Gaming is about choice, why not add more choice so the individual can select the type they want?

The teeny babies who try to justify the "practicality and usefulness" of boob fitting armor make me giggle. I mean sure it's nice to look at, but it's down right ridiculous at times. Tera's armor is one of the reasons my girl wasn't to hot on playing anything other than an Ellin in that game (Unfortunately she forbade me from joining in on the loli fun. It's to creepy for a grown man to enjoy being a little girl apparently).

        • I totally agree. Women in video games do not need such skimpy armor or armor that makes their assets 'pop' out. I think seeing a video game where a woman character can be fully armored in something awesome like 'male' armor would be a great thing to see. But we are talking about Bungie here and in my opinion they do a great job in the market of not so skimpy female armor.

        • While I agree with the sentiments of the thread, I don't think there's much to worry about. Bungie is pretty much the only sci-fi developer I can think of that doesn't have these problems (some ONI promotional art aside).

        • I agree. I think it's dumb that some developers sacrifice practicality and protection for arousal. Women warriors should be looked upon as feminine yet tough, not things for male players to stare at.

        • ok lets look at this post with some basic knowledge one the first link with the fighting game link is from japan not the us two the mass effect armor lets just say that the power armor in that like most sci fi power armor is using a skinsuit which is just like a wetsuit that surfers wear, you would not be able to wear a sports bra it would not work and three male power armor is made different then female power armor due to the fact that male and female bodies are different i really doubt that any female would like to have a cod piece over their genitals just like i would not want my family jewels to be crushed and have an area over my chest that would move and not be fitted to my chest size and on a more personal note if your going to make a reference to mass effect and female armor why use mass effect and not mass effect 3 you really should use your head before you go and post something like this and think about how the male body is built and how the female body is built, males have wider shoulders and narrow hips while females have narrow shoulders wide chests and wide hips done

          • I get what you're saying, and I don't necessarily disagree with it either. I also feel pretty confident that Bungie will lean more towards realistic anatomy like you're hoping. With all of this in mind, though, like others have mentioned, sex sells. It sells pretty well, and if for some reason, Bungie finds that sales look better if they put in ridiculous armor that's "sexy" after release than if they, instead, use realistic anatomy for their women characters, I'm not going to crucify them. Making money is awesome. Making more money is awesome...er. I know personally I could give a damn about the size of breasts on a video game character. Hey, at least we're not Japan.

            • I honestly wouldn't worry about it. I bet it will take the awesome male armor and put and woman in it, like in Reach, but just a bit skinner, so the 2 can be told apart.
